Urbanization and health
This paper investigates the impact of urbanization on health outcomes in Africa, with a focus on the mediating role of slum prevalence. Slums are operationalized following UN-Habitat definitions, using indicators such as lack of durable housing, inadequate sanitation, limited access to clean water, overcrowding, and insufficient access to basic services. Applying causal mediation analysis to a panel of 40 African countries from 2000 to 2022, we f…
Impact of Natural Disasters on Education Quality
The impact of natural hazards on human capital accumulation remains a critical challenge for developing nations. The 2010 Benin floods, which displaced over 100,000 people and damaged schools, exemplify this threat. This study assesses the direct and regional spillover effects of the floods on educational outcomes using a municipality-level spatial analysis. Affected municipalities experienced a 7.2-percentage-point decline in the primary school …
Does land degradation have an aggravating effect on the multidimensional poverty of rural households? Empirical verification of Burkina Faso
Land degradation is a real obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of this article is to analyze the effect of land degradation on household poverty in Burkina Faso. To do this, the recursive bivariate probit model and the instrumental variable probit model (IV-probit) were used on data from the Harmonized Survey of Household Living Conditions to account for potential endogeneity between the explained and explanator…
Assessing the contributions of health deficits to frailty among older people in Sub-Saharan Africa
The higher frailty burden among women and its progressive increase with age highlight the need for early, gender-sensitive screening approaches. Preventive strategies should begin in midlife and focus on risk factors linked to frailty, such as low physical activity and poorly managed chronic conditions. This will help to slow frailty progression in later life
Does digital finance improve welfare effects of maize farmers’ productivity gains
Purpose In Burkina Faso, maize is a key component in farm households’ food security and welfare. However, maize productivity in the country is low and productivity improvements do not necessarily result in better living conditions. This paper aims to establish linkages between maize productivity and welfare by considering the context of digital finance adoption for farmers in Burkina Faso. Design/methodology/approach For this purpose, we use an e…
Self-assessed life expectancy among older adults in Côte d’Ivoire
We extended the estimation of subjective life expectancy by accounting for heterogeneity in the distribution of the estimated subjective life expectancy. This approach improved the usual methods for estimating individual subjective life expectancies and may provide insight into the elderly's perception of aging, which could be used to forecast the demand for health services and long-term care needs
