The measurement of Christian nationalism in broader perspective
The literature on Christian nationalism has expanded and matured quickly. Nonetheless, few pieces have documented the measurement properties of its namesake concept, and those that have trumpet conclusions that vary from “the most common measure is flawed” to “Christian nationalism is highly robust to measurement variance.” To address this emerging measurement controversy, we start by exploring the factor structure of 10 datasets containing the 6…
Attention Versus Handshakes
Numerous studies show that China uses its ODA‐like overseas development financing to promote soft power and improve its international image. In this study, we seek to understand how. We examine the role of Chinese state‐sponsored media and diplomacy as complements to Chinese foreign aid. We propose that the coverage of aid recipients in Xinhua articles targeted at foreign audiences, as well as the number of diplomatic visits from Beijing hosted b…
An Undergraduate Degree in ‘Data for Political Research’
Political science is useful for many things but especially for the suite of research methods that we teach our students that generalize to a wide range of careers. However, that training is often buried deep in the major and is not well integrated into further coursework except perhaps for senior research. In reaction to that model, we started a new program that frontloads quantitative research methods, beginning with data visualization and then …
Aid for non-aggression
The argued purpose of non-aggression pacts is not to ensure cooperation between signatories but to signal a commitment to peace to third-parties. This study tests whether foreign aid is a mechanism that makes this third-party signal credible. An analysis of aid commitments between 1991 and 2014 shows that donors strategically reward non-aggression partners with greater aid, and that third parties adjust their behavior toward non-aggression dyads,…
Connect First, then Suppress
Over recent decades, developing countries have witnessed a rapid surge in internet connectivity, driven by an upswing in aid projects dedicated to information and communication technology (ICT) development. While many expect the increased internet connectivity to contribute to the freedom of expression and freer flow of information, others worry that it would rather enable recipient governments to expand their information control and digital surv…
How reducing documentation burdens impacts equity in access to small business Covid ‐19 relief funding
Scholars have unveiled how and why administrative burdens perpetuate inequity in access to government benefits. However, less is known about the tools public managers can use to reduce burdens and disparities in program access. We partner with a local government in the U.S. to investigate whether a reduction in documentation requirements increased equity by promoting access for “underserved” small business owners (i.e., racial/ethnic minorities, …
