Understanding the experiences of virtual race participants through the lens of mindfulness theory
The development of digital technologies and innovations has contributed, in part, to the rise of virtual races. As a type of active leisure event, virtual races have the potential to overcome geographic constraints and attract more participants. To further our understanding of participants’ virtual race experiences, we adopted mindfulness theory to examine components that contributed to participants reporting a mindful experience or a mindless ex…
Handbook of Sport and International Development
This chapter is written from the distinct perspective of father and son who have worked in and around the world of sport for peace and reconciliation – for 30 and 13 years respectively, both on the ground and at study. In this contribution, we consider the real and potential capacity of sport as a vehicle for building and sustaining peace in the context of societies that are deeply fractured and which, resulting from these fissures, have experien…

Disasters and catastrophes: The impact on people with disabilities’ leisure-time physical activity participation and associative mental health and well-being
Disasters disrupt people’s ability to be physically active. Despite the well-known health benefits of physical activity, there is limited understanding of how disasters may affect those who experience constraints to being active, such as people with disabilities. This study explored how one major disaster, the COVID-19 pandemic, affected people with disabilities’ participation in leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and their mental health and w…
Taegeuk Warriors with Blue Eyes: A Media Discourse Analysis of the South Korean Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team and Its Naturalized Athletes
This study examines media discourses of the naturalized athletes of the South Korean men’s national ice hockey team. Building on the conceptual frameworks of imagined community, ethnic nationalism, and previous studies on athlete migration and naturalization, we further an understanding of the process of deconstruction and reconstruction of South Korean ethnic and national identity. We use Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to explore how S…
Exploring ethnic identity perceptions of Hyun-Jin Ryu's Korean American fans
The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of Korean American fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers' Korean pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. The study focused on the details of …
Interrogating the motivations of sport for development and peace practitioners
The purpose of this study was to interrogate the motivations of sport for development and peace (SDP) practitioners for initially becoming involved in the field and to better understand their involvement over time. Specifically, this study aimed to identify key characteristics and motives of practitioners to gain further understanding of the implementation, execution, and approach of SDP programs and whether or not evangelical rhetoric and neocol…

Encouraging servant leadership: A qualitative study of how a cause-related sporting event inspires participants to serve
A longitudinal, qualitative case study was conducted to explore if a cause-related sporting event could inspire participants to serve others and how the event achieved this. Servant leadership theory, social leverage theory, and social capital theory were used to inform the investigation. Findings revealed the event encouraged servant leadership. The structural mechanisms and social processes which helped to achieve this were: (a) creating event-…
Building social capital: Examining the impact of Street Soccer USA on its volunteers
Most studies on the use of sport with marginalized populations have centered upon the impact on participants, with few studies examining the impact of these interventions on other stakeholder groups, such as volunteers. While it has been contended that volunteering provides a form of social participation and civic engagement that can foster development of citizenship and social capital, these ideas are disputed and lack empirical evidence. Thus, …
Integrating sport-for-development theory and praxis
In recent years there has been a growing social movement toward the use of non-traditional sport practices as a vehicle for social change, reaching communities with messages in ways traditional sport practices cannot. However, scholars have suggested that the effectiveness of sport to promote positive social change has been minimal. The absence of scientific evidence and an undergirding theoretical framework of how sport can work for social chang…
