Social media ritual as a digital leisure culture
Social Media as a Pathway to Leisure
Applying the uses and gratifications theory, we explored why new mothers with young children in Taiwan use social media for leisure and how their needs are met. Participants comprised 25 mothers aged 25 to 40 years. Data were obtained using narrative, semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the relationship between new mothers and social media in shaping their leisure lives is not additive, but interactive. Social media enables new mo…

Leisure constraints and participant intention among Vietnamese migrant laborers in Taiwan
Online communities, identity, and leisure
Social media has generated diverse ways to enjoy leisure activities, for instance, through online communities where people interact and share leisure interests. This study applied qualitative research methods to examine the online and offline leisure activities of 20 married Taiwanese women with young children. It explored how their participation in online communities allowed them to construct collective identities and interact to find meaning in…
The Structural Control of Labor and Leisure of Working Fathers in Taiwan
Through in-depth interviews, this qualitative study used a critical approach to explore the perceived freedom of working fathers in pursuing leisure activities. Interviews were conducted with 15 Taiwanese working fathers from various occupations about their leisure experiences, constraints, and what leisure means to them. From the results, three themes emerged: (1) work-life imbalance of working fathers, (2) the famine of free time, and (3) freed…

Most studies on Taiwanese women’s leisure life mainly focus on lifestyle and leisure behaviors that fail to discuss the symbolic meanings or meaning-making process of participating in social leisure activities. This study applies the social exchange framework to examine the social leisure activities of Taiwanese urban women from two aspects: the meaning making of social leisure to them, and what they can attain through social leisure participatio…

The Role of Social Support and Self-Efficacy in Shaping the Leisure Time Physical Activity of Older Adults
Lack of social support and low self-efficacy are important barriers to regular exercise and physical activity. However, it is unclear whether these resources contribute significantly to CDC recommended physical activity levels and which of these factors (and their associated sub-domains) are more robust in relating to leisure time physical activity (LTPA) among older adults. This study examines the role of social support and self-efficacy in shap…
Gender and Ethnic Variations in Urban Park Preferences, Visitation, and Perceived Benefits
This paper examined how gender and ethnicity are related to preferences for various park characteristics, visitation to urban parks and open spaces, and perception of park benefits as reported by participants in a mail survey of residents in two metropolitan areas in the eastern United States. In total, 1570 questionnaires were completed, but 65 cases were deleted because they failed to identify their ethnicity or gender. The overall response rat…
