Toward a Critical Understanding of Gentrification and Mega-Sport Event: An Analysis of the Rental Market in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games
Grounded in a nexus of sport sociology and economics inquiry, the present study examined the rental market at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games, considering increased rent as a critical antecedent to gentrification. Specifically, econometric analyses based on a difference-in-differences design were employed to examine longitudinal data of rent transactions in the hosting districts. The impact of fighting in the NHL on attendance
Sport spectators often enjoy violence in sport games they attend. Our research note attempts to provide an examination of how violence in National Hockey League (NHL) games, specifically fighting, impacts regular season attendance as a percentage of its capacity. Novelty effects and sports facilities in smaller cities: Evidence from Canadian hockey arenas
Like their larger counterparts, smaller cities use public funds to build facilities to host local sports franchises. One argument for doing so is the new economic activity and attendance new facilities generate. However, academic research examining both major league stadium/arenas and minor league baseball stadiums finds a novelty effect – a brief period of higher attendance – exists but not a long-term sustainable increase for new facilities. Th…
The effect of Porter’s generic strategies on organisational problems of non-profit sports clubs
Non-profit sports clubs face several organisational problems relating to memberships, finances, demographic changes and competition from other organisations, which can be addressed through strategic planning. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Porter's (1980) generic strategies (cost leadership, differentiation, focus) on the severity of those organisational problems. Quantitative panel data from a German sports club survey are…

Within society, there are many publications regarding expectations of firm performance. These include analysis, industry insiders and ranking service. Within sports, bookmakers provide betting odds that reflect the expected outcome of matches and are determined by several factors. The purpose of this study is to analyse the determinants of expected match outcome (i.e. betting odds) and compare them to those of actual match outcome. Data from the …
