The labour of climate change in community sport
This article examines the impacts of climate change on community sport. The study is located in Te Tairāwhiti, a region of New Zealand that has been significantly and repeatedly impacted by extreme weather events. This paper draws upon focus groups and interviews with 46 young athletes (aged 13–25 years old), and 23 coaches, managers, leaders and parent volunteers from a range of community sports clubs. Engaging the concepts of ‘climate adaptatio…
From environmental sustainability to climate change adaptation
In recent years, the field of sport ecology research has grown, and its focus has broadened. Initially, this subdiscipline of sport management concentrated on the relationship between sport and environmental sustainability. More recently, attention has shifted towards the connection between sport and climate change. Despite this broadening, there has been little academic discussion about the factors driving this change or its implications for spo…
Advancing climate change resilience of the Winter Olympic-Paralympic Games
Football on the frontlines
Oceania is a region which contributes little to anthropogenic causes of climate change yet bears many of its most immediate burdens. This can be demonstrated through football in the region as several member associations of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) are threatened by rising sea levels, floods, heat and other climate harms while lacking the organisational capacity to adapt to climate change. Using a climate justice lens to understand…
Natural to artificial
Over time, sport has progressively moved indoors and toward more controlled environments, a set of related processes dubbed ‘artificialisation’ and ‘indoorisation’. This has mirrored broader anthropocentric changes in society globally. In reflecting on the evolving relationship between sport and the natural environment, and the shifts in who and what is considered in the production and reproduction of sport practices, we use MacInnis’ method of d…
Warming Up
The world of sport has a new opponent: climate change. In recent years, a world championship marathon was held at midnight to avoid the blistering sun. Professional athletes needed oxygen tanks to play during wildfire season in California. Players collapsed and play was suspended amid the heat and bushfire smoke at the Australian Tennis open. Ski resorts in the Alps have turned into ghost towns. Golf courses are sinking into the sea. And then the…
Impacts of climate change on organized sport
The relationship between sport and the environment has been primarily examined to understand how sport impacts the natural environment. However, as the influence of climate change has become more apparent, there is a need to establish a systematic understanding of the impacts of climate change on the operations of sport. The aim of this review is to take stock of existing literature on climate change's impacts on organized competitive sport entit…
Leveraging sport as a venue and vehicle for transformative sustainability learning
Purpose Given greater awareness of environmental issues and the acceleration of climate change, universities are increasingly requiring undergraduate students to complete coursework in environmental issues. Research has shown that environmental courses hosted in science departments can be too challenging for students with no science background. Thus, new approaches to general environmental education at the undergraduate level are necessary. This …
Practitioner perspectives of legacy
Although legacy frameworks exist in academia and legacies are oft discussed in relation to publicly- and privately funded events, there remains a dearth of knowledge on practitioner conceptualisations of the concept. A case study of the Toronto 2014 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games was conducted using semi-structured interviews with event organisers and city officials to understand how practitioners conceptualise legacies, and what their goals are in …
One Step Forward, Two Tweets Back
Between 2000 and 2018, the number of fights in professional hockey decreased by more than half, reflecting rule changes intended to preserve player health. A 2019 playoff fight ignited debate on social media over the place of fighting in hockey. This research involved a content analysis of an incendiary tweet and the 920 replies it solicited. Content analysis confirmed that cultural backlash exists in sport and provided insight into manifestation…
