  • A Risk-Centered Approach to Data Privacy

Open Access•Xiaodong Ding, Haoran Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2026

Recent years have witnessed a rapid evolution of China’s data privacy legislation, contrasting sharply with its long-standing Confucian and Communist notions of privacy. Triggered by social incidents such as telecom fraud amid large-scale data collection, this legislative surge reflects a risk-centered approach aimed at maintaining overall social stability. Rooted in a collectivist imaginary of data privacy, data privacy is characterized as a del…

  • Same text, different meaning

Open Access•Xiaodong Ding, Hao Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

This article analyzes the divergence between China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), despite their textual similarities. It argues that China’s approach to data protection is shaped by distinct domestic understandings of “risk,” rooted in past legislation, judicial practices, and social concerns. Using focal point theory, the authors identify three key dimensions of risk in China:…

  • Partial substitution of rice husks for manure in greenhouse vegetable fields

Open Access•Chao Fei, Shirong Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2021

Soil aggregate stability and C stock are key factors in greenhouse vegetable production, which are influenced by the application of different organic materials. However, the responses of soil aggregate stability and C stock to organic amendment in greenhouse vegetable fields are not well understood. A 5‐year study was carried out in greenhouse vegetable fields to investigate the effect of partial substitution of rice husks for manure on soil aggr…

  • Impacts of salinity on the stability of soil organic carbon in the croplands of the Yellow River Delta

Open Access•Kaijing Zhang, Xiujun Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2021

This study aims to improve our understanding of the mechanisms regulating the stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) in saline–alkaline soils. We hypothesized that desorption of SOC is greater in higher salinity/higher pH soils, and the higher level of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) leads to enhanced SOC stability (or weaker SOC desorption) in saline–alkaline soils like those of the Yellow River Delta (YRD). We collected soils from 23 cropland sites…

  • Rethinking China’s Social Credit System

Xiaodong Ding, Dale Yuhao Zhong•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2020•Cited by: 8

China’s plan to establish a social credit system (SCS) has aroused the concern of building a surveillance state. Yet this view oversimplifies and misunderstands the essence of the SCS. The highest priorities of the SCS are promoting economic credibility and reinforcing court orders. Meanwhile, the SCS aims to steer citizens’ social behaviors and interactions by utilizing a redlist system that introduces numerous moderate rewards. The SCS is also …

  • The People According to the Chinese Communist Party

    Open Access•Xiaodong Ding•ARTICLE•Modern China•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 20

This article argues that the Chinese Communist Party has adopted a unique understanding of the people. Unlike the liberal view, which generally considers the people a nonpolitical and positive entity, the party views the people as essentially political. The party’s political understanding of the people, this article argues, is consistent with the very nature of the people. Viewed from the political understanding of the people and representing the…

  • Public Focusing Events as Catalysts

Xin Zhang, Xiaodong Ding•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2017•Cited by: 5

Empowered by the media, legislations in China have, over recent years, been increasingly influenced by public focusing events. Many national legislations have been triggered by public focusing events, rather than being entirely pre-determined by the Party or by the government. After a detailed empirical study of 132 public focusing events and national legislations between 2003 and 2016, the article explores the features, the reasons, and the adva…

  • Law According to the Chinese Communist Party

    Open Access•Xiaodong Ding, Ding Xiaodong•ARTICLE•Modern China•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 36

This article argues that the Chinese Communist Party has adopted a unique understanding of law. Unlike the liberal view and the unwritten constitution view, which generally consider law as positive norms that exist independently of politics, the party understands law as a reflection of the party’s and the people’s will and a form of the party’s and the people’s self-discipline. In the party’s view, liberal rule of law theories are self-contradict…
