  • Ordinary Life Within an Extraordinary Project: Demystifying the Third Front

    Open Access•Paul Kendall•ARTICLE•Modern China•2025•References: 22

Since its launch in the 1960s, the Third Front has undergone a major discursive transformation, from military secret under Mao Zedong and economic anachronism under Deng Xiaoping to industrial heritage under Xi Jinping. In the early twenty-first century, commemorative discourse presents this military-industrial complex of China’s hinterlands as an extraordinary project within which workers led extraordinary lives. • Orientalist afterlives: Theorizing discourse about Peppa Pig and China

    Paul Kendall•ARTICLE•East Asian Journal of Popular…•2023•References: 6

In recent years, there have been numerous English-language reports on the purported censorship of Peppa Pig in China. This article goes beyond this discourse to explore both how this British animation was translated into Chinese popular culture and how English-language news outlets subsequently responded to Peppa’s presence in China. Firstly, it examines how the dubbing of Peppa Pig into Chinese facilitated promotional claims about the universal …

Despite its urban status, Kaili has been branded by the local government as a yuanshengtai tourist destination. This Chinese term literally translates as “original ecology” but is used in ordinary conversation to denote a cultural authenticity in which people exist …

  • Between big city and authentic village: Branding the small Chinese city

    Paul Kendall•ARTICLE•City•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 8

While recent academic research has already produced an impressive corpus on big cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, the small Chinese city has been mostly ignored. In this paper, I suggest that consideration of the small city can bring a new perspective on the wider urban fabric of which it is an element. Although small city governments have embraced urban entrepreneurialism with the same enthusiasm as China's big cities, different configuration…
