    This article investigates how the Taiwanese edition of Cosmopolitan (1992-1997) may serve to resolve a tension felt by modern women in Taiwan by weaving global values and local values together into a tapestry of “modern womanhood” that can dwell within, and yet extend, the local culture.   • Agony-Resolution Pathways: How Women Perceive American Men in Cosmopolitan's Agony (Advice) Column

    This paper uses a grounded theory approach to examine the perceptions and depictions of American men in Cosmopolitan's Agony (Advice) Column. A theoretical typology of “Agony-Resolution Pathways” is developed from the data. This theoretical typology generates several insights regarding gender relations.     Two alternative explanations of the 'sexual revolution' are contrasted and explored by using two nation-wide surveys undertaken in 1986 and 1988 of high schools students in Taiwan and Hong Kong respectively.
