  • The environmental nightmare of the economic miracle

Linda Gail Arrigo•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Concerned Asian…•1994•Cited by: 4

This is an article about gut feelings: The kind of gut feeling you get when you step out of an elegant wood-paneled coffee shop in Taipei, where you have sipped a dense European brew at U.S. $6.00 for a small cup, and are assaulted by a whirl of grit and trash in the humid eddies of air, the noxious fumes of motorcycles, and the growl and honk of nearby traffic. The mounting nausea you feel when you cannot avoid eyeing slop spilled from restauran…

  • A brief report on Taiwan's National Legislative Yuan Elections, 19 December 1992

Linda Gail Arrigo•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Concerned Asian…•1993•Cited by: 1

Gold cows are no longer idols in Taiwan, and the change comes none too soon. But now after the December 1992 elections for the Legislative Yuan, we can see that gold…

  • A view of the United Nations Conference on Human Rights, Vienna, June 1993

Linda Gail Arrigo•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Concerned Asian…•1993

Human rights activists are a rambuctious lot. They are driven by an intimate knowledge of human suffering, and they are not going to be silenced even if you invite them to a United Nations meeting and pay their air fare. To the contrary, with avid joy they will seize the opportunity to expose the wrongs of their governments to world scrutiny

  • The industrial work force of young women in Taiwan

Linda Gail Arrigo•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Concerned Asian…•1980•Cited by: 9

Young women's participation in industry in Taiwan has increased phenomenally since the mid- 1960s due to the development of light industry for export, notably the textile and electronics industries. The number of women employed as workers in manufacturing increased 3.2 times in the decade 1965 to 1974, while the total population of women over 15 years of age increased 37.5 percent. Table 1 shows the shift in employment by age category, from 1965 …
