  • The Many Endings of the International Colonial Institute and the White Appropriation of Decolonisation (1949–2000)

    Open Access•Florian Wagner•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2025

This article explores several key moments in which one of the most significant colonial institutions of the twentieth century – the International Colonial Institute (ICI) – faked its demise, pretending to end its involvement in colonial governance and its role in producing colonial knowledge, a practice it had maintained since its establishment in 1893. I argue that the ICI faked the elimination of its coloniality by embracing and appropriating t…

    Florian Wagner•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2024

In The Principle of Hope (1954, 1955, 1959), Ernst Bloch emphasized the importance of “learning hope,” and indeed, amidst the multiple global and planetary crises we are facing today, hope—or rather the utopian drive to imagine better futures—has become an inevitable necessity. Raphael Kabo’s Utopia Beyond Capitalism in Contemporary Literature: A Commons Poetics, with its renewed attention to the commons and its particular emphasis on the transfo…

  • Green Utopia Now! A Transdisciplinary Symposium on How to Deal with the Climate Crisis

Manuel Sousa Oliveira, Ilenia Vittoria Casmiri et al.•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2023

How could we come together in transdisciplinary collaboration to deal with the climate crisis? Could utopianism be what brings us together? Last summer (2022) we started asking ourselves these questions, and months later Green Utopia Now! A Transdisciplinary Symposium on How to Deal with the Climate Crisis was our initial attempt at finding an answer. The symposium was an ambitious and challenging venture from the start. Our aspirations for it we…

  • Colonial Internationalism and the Governmentality of Empire, 1893–1982

    Open Access•Florian Wagner•BOOK•Colonial Internationalism and the…•2022

In 1893, a group of colonial officials from thirteen countries abandoned their imperial rivalry and established the International Colonial Institute (ICI), which became the world's most important colonial think tank of the twentieth century. Through the lens of the ICI, Florian Wagner argues that this international cooperation reshaped colonialism as a transimperial and governmental policy. The book demonstrates that the ICI's strategy of using i…

  • Close distance. Social segregation in trading empires and colonies—An introduction

Open Access•Cornel Zwierlein, Florian Wagner•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2020•References: 19

The history of segregation is usually concentrating on modern racial forms of it, in colonial settings or in large urban conglomerates. Mathematical definitions of segregation refer to the ratio between the type of segregated element (e.g. Blacks) in a given larger area and its sub-area. We are suggesting that pre-modern as well as postcolonial forms of segregation are far less determined by this space/race-alignment. For a long-term history of s…
