  • Utopian semiospheres: Isolation and dialogue across borders

    Open Access•Artur Blaim, Ludmiła Gruszewska-Blaim et al.•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2024

The paper applies Juri Lotman’s theory of the semiosphere to utopian studies with the aim of identifying the principal components and mode of functioning of classic utopian discourse. Without questioning the ultimate result of any interaction within a utopian dialogic situation, which necessarily demonstrates the superiority of the ideal world (no-place/ou-topos) over the external world of imperfection (e.g. Europe or America), it is argued that …

  • The Dystopian Beyond: George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four

    Ludmiła Gruszewska-Blaim, Ludmiła Gruszewska‐Blaim•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2020•Cited by: 1

Proposing to treat dystopia as a nonsemiosphere (i.e., a potentially semiotic space that eliminates independent acts of meaning assignation and uncontrolled social…

  • Joshua Barnes's Gerania: A Diminutive Utopia of Hospitality

    Artur Blaim, Ludmiła Gruszewska-Blaim et al.•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2020

Focusing on the broadly conceived principle of hospitality, the essay offers an analysis of Joshua Barnes's Gerania, a highly original but little-studied late seventeenth-century utopia set in India and featuring the Pygmies as utopians and Homer as their lawgiver. It is argued that Barnes's utopia offers a radical alternative to the policy of closure and isolation adopted in early modern utopian commonwealths. Its peculiar construction results i…

  • Introduction: Solidarity and Utopia

    Artur Blaim, Ludmiła Gruszewska-Blaim et al.•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2018

The present special issue of Utopian Studies is devoted to utopia and solidarity considered from philosophical, sociopolitical, cultural, and literary perspectives. It was inspired by the 18th Utopian Studies Society Conference “Solidarity and Utopia,” which took place in Gdańsk in July 2017. As the papers presented at that conference clearly demonstrated, the most immediate connotations of the word solidarity used in different contexts tend to b…
