  • “The vast ocean of infinity & eternity”: Creating the (In)finite Archive of The Elizabeth Montagu’s Correspondence Online ( Emco )

    Open Access•Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Women s Writing•2023

This article explores the complexities of creating an archive – in our case, a digital archive of eighteenth-century manuscript letters, The Elizabeth Montagu Correspondence Online (EMCO). Elizabeth Montagu was one of the most prominent and well-connected women in eighteenth-century polite society. EMCO faces a variety of challenges. Firstly, the project aims to trace all extant letters in different libraries and public/private collections; secon…

  • Solarpunk Futures

Nicole Pohl, Nicole Barbara Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2022

Utopian Studies, Futures, and Anticipatory Studies all focus, if in different ways, on the past, present, and (alternative) futures. Utopian narratives anticipate, to cite Abensour, “what is different, the wish for the advent of a radical alterity here and now.”1 A tool that all disciplines use is storytelling—utopias as narratives by definition, Futures and Anticipatory Studies as critical and inquisitive tools. The Solarpunk Futures game taps i…

  • Fantastic Cities and Cabin Fever

    Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2019

In 2015, the filmmaker, artist, and writer Penny Woolcock created an imaginary city, Utopia, at the Roundhouse, London, in collaboration with Block9. It staged a blend of miscellaneous pop-up installations featuring Londoners who were each telling their individual stories about inequality, consumerism, gentrification, education, crime, and social media.1 The narrative soundscapes set within an extraordinary design brought to light the parallel li…

  • The World Begins in Man: A Brief and Selected History of Translations of Utopia into German

    Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2016

  • Das Echo der Utopien: Tanz und Politik, Deutsches Tanzarchiv KÖln, Cologne; Intellectual Barbarians: The Kibbo Kift Kindred, Whitechapel Gallery, London

    Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2016

Art is always political! Only dance is not! Dance has been somewhat ignored in utopian studies as a potential transformatory and political artistic expression, though performance and drama have attracted critical attention. The exhibition Das Echo der Utopien at the Dance Archive in Cologne uses its own archival materials to prove that dance can be political by looking at archival visual material from the sixteenth century to the German dance the…

  • Utopias: A Brief History from Ancient Writings to Virtual Communities

    Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2015

Howard P. Segal is well known to the utopian scholarly community, particularly with his excellent work on technology and utopianism in publications such as Technological Utopianism in American Culture (1985), Future Imperfect: The Mixed Blessings of Technology in America (1994), Technology in America: A Brief History (1989, 2nd ed. 1999, with Alan Marcus), and Recasting the Machine Age: Henry Ford's Village Industries (2005). • Utopia of Resistance: 40 Years of Longo Maï (Die Utopia der Widerspenstigen: 40 Jahre Longo Maï)

    Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2014

The Longo maï cooperative network (http://www.prolongomai.ch) was founded in 1973, inspired by the events of the May 1968 student revolutions across Europe. A group of Spartakus students from Austria and Switzerland met in December 1972 in Basel, Switzerland, in an “International Congress for the Education of European Youth” (Internationaler Kongress zur Bildung Europäischer Jugendgemeinschaften). Inspired by the revolt of May 1968 and a general …

  • Beyond Nature Writing: The Dark Mountain Project and The Land: An Occasional Magazine About Land Rights

    Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2014

We must unhumanise our views a little, and become confidentAs the rock and ocean that we were made from. Nature writing has long been a revered yet ideologically disputed literary genre and mode. Oscillating between accusations of (bourgeois) escapism and environmental anarchism, nature writing has always been tapping into political debates and agendas. My review seeks to introduce two journal publications that contribute in a wider sense to natu…

Since the publication of Thomas More's genre-defining work Utopia in 1516, the field of utopian literature has evolved into an ever-expanding domain. This Companion presents an extensive historical survey of the development of utopianism, from the publication of Utopia to today's dark and despairing tendency towards dystopian pessimism, epitomised by works such as George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. • The Quest for Utopia in the Eighteenth Century

    Open Access•Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2008•References: 7

This article reviews critical scholarship on eighteenth‐century utopias and utopianism over the last ten years. It suggests that, in the light of current debates about Enlightenment discourses, eighteenth‐century utopias and utopianism reflect accurately the multitude of discourses on gender, sexuality, colonialism and politics that make the Enlightenment so contentious

Guenter Heiduk, Nicole Pohl•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Economic development zones are a good example of how the interplay of economic and political decision-makers fosters regional development. Our analysis aims to shed light on dynamics and determinants of this process by studying two state-level economic development zones in central China. These are interesting examples since there is empirical evidence of the prosperity of these zones, although they do not benefit from proximity to the coast like …
