  • The Catalogus geometrarum from the Corpus Agrimensorum

    Open Access•Richard M Marshall•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2022

An overlooked fragmentary Latin text preserved in the Corpus of Roman Land Surveyors proves to be a translation of a lost branch of the Aratean commentary tradition. Stripped of the classicizing veneer mistakenly applied by earlier editors, the fragment can be recognized as the work of an unknown and inept late-antique Translator, perhaps working within a generation of the fragment’s earliest manuscript witness, the Codex Arcerianus. The branch o…

  • Varro, Atticus, and Annales

    Open Access•Richard M Marshall, R M A Marshall•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Institute of…•2017•Cited by: 1

This paper explores the scholarly relationship between Varro and Atticus by focusing on the attribution of a Varronian fragment (Gell. 17.21.24). Taking into account Gellius's citation practices, it is argued that the fragment (concerning the execution of the tyrant Manlius) was mediated via Atticus, not taken directly from Varro. The evidence for Varro's and Atticus's friendship and scholarly cooperation undermines traditional attempts to identi…

  • Visiting the Shakers

    Richard M Marshall•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2017

During the second half of the nineteenth century, visitors to Shaker villages were numerous and various, quite various. In 1865, a New York Times reporter offered these observations: “Not a smile illumines the hard, wrinkled features of male or female Shaker. The youngsters ... must enjoy the gymnastics [the Shakers' dancing], but their enjoyment has little opportunity for display. Solemn old heads frown down the slightest demonstration of nature…

  • New York Amish

    Richard M Marshall•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2017

Quilts with “a black-and-white checked” pattern “for the NASCAR market” are stitched together by an Amish woman whose family uses an outdoor privy because church rules stipulate “no indoor plumbing”; an Amish man delivers cans of his milk to an Amish-owned neighborhood collection tank cooled by electricity because state laws require the refrigeration of milk. These are just a few of the images Karen Johnson-Weiner presents of the New York State A…

  • Frequency and Detection of Malingering in Homicide Defendants Undergoing Criminal Responsibility Evaluations Using the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality

    Open Access•Wade C Myers, Ryan Hall et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2016

This retrospective study reports on (a) the prevalence of malingering in a sample of 20 homicide defendants seen in jail settings for criminal responsibility evaluations, and (b) the feasibility of the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP) for malingering detection in this sample. Based on previous non-clinical simulation research, it was hypothesized that the SNAP validity scales would predict group membership for homicide def…

  • Sinking “Like a Corpse” or Living the “Soul’s Full Desire

    Richard M Marshall•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2010

This article examines the disparity between fictional and historical accounts of Shaker women. Th e fiction, influenced by pervading social beliefs like the cult of true womanhood, usually portrays a woman who becomes dissatisfied with her Shaker life, concluding that it is a sort of living death that isolates her from love, marriage, and motherhood. Historical records reveal independent and fulfilled women who became Shakers for religious reason…
