Amour-Propre According to Rousseau: On the Shortcomings of the Prevailing Consensus
Rousseau’s concept amour-propre has become the subject of renewed debates. Inspired by Nicholas Dent’s reinterpretation of the term, it is now a widespread view that amour-propre is a positive phenomenon in Rousseau’s moral philosophy, a longing for equal recognition rather than an urge to dominate everybody else. The present article challenges this reading. It does so by going back to Dent’s 1988 work on Rousseau to question the textual evidence…
Rousseau's Second Discourse and Social Contract: Challenging the Received View
According to conventional wisdom, Rousseau's two key texts, the Second Discourse and the Social Contract , are tied together as question and answer. This is the view that is challenged in the present article. It is demonstrated how the Social Contract cannot, in fact, be more than a partial solution to the problems defined by the Second Discourse , and it is pointed out how Rousseau's Project for Corsica is a far more plausible answer to the chal…
Citizens and Peasants: Reconsidering Rousseau’s View of Democracy
I denne artikel undersøges lovgiverens funktion i Rousseaus Samfundspagten, idet denne figur her udfylder ekspertens rolle.
Rousseau’s Implicit Socratism: Utopianism in the Social Contract
Whether or not Rousseau’s Social Contract is a utopian text is a matter of longstanding debate. This article suggests that the answer to this question is not a simple one. Rousseau’s text contains different levels of meaning, and while some of them are utopian, others are not. Specifically, the article focuses on three levels of meaning in the book and concludes that while there is a utopian level in the text, it is not where most interpreters fi…
This paper examines how first Rousseau and later Marx both try to tackle heritageas tradition. Following Althusser’s analysis, it is argued that Rousseau’s attempt at solving the problem fails, and that Marx, although his initial approach to the pro-blem resembles that of Rousseau, in his mature writings finds a more constructive way to deal with tradition as ideology. Finally, it is suggested that the failure ofRousseau’s approach may be due to …
Marx on Politics: On the Search for a Missing Concept
Even though Marxism is an extremely important contribution to modern political theory, Marx himself never formulated a clear theoretical concept of politics. The absence of such a theory has been interpreted by some as an indication of politics being a matter of secondary importance in an essentially economic theory. Others have seen this absence as a fundamental problem for Marxist thought. Inspired by Althusserian Marxism, this article offers a…
