  • Misinformation, Magic, and Mendacity

    Open Access•Paul Draper, Paul W Draper et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Consciousness•2025•References: 7

With disinformation rising at alarming rates, we are experiencing a crisis of truth. Our commodified culture, political establishment, and media industries generate and disseminate false information in myriad ways, creating a world where it is difficult to ascertain what is actually real. Interestingly, many of us desire and are delighted by deception when it occurs as theatrical magic. In this paper, we examine various deception techniques used …

  • ‘I’m not a virus’

    Open Access•Jennifer Zheng, Joseph P Zompetti•ARTICLE•Asian Journal of Communication•2023

Since the start of Covid-19, anti-Asian sentiment spiked. From March 2020 to June 2021, there were a total of 9,081 self-reported incidents of hate across the United States (Stop AAPI Hate. (2021). https://stopaapihate.org/stop-aapi-hate-national-report-2/). As Covid-19 spread into the U.S., President Trump immediately blamed China by referring to the virus as the ‘Chinese Virus’ and used the hashtag #ChineseVirus on Twitter (Weise, E. 2021). Ant…

  • The Palazzo Migliori as Exemplification of Laudato Si’

Joseph P Zompetti, Religious Communication Association•ARTICLE•The Journal of Communication and…•2021

Recently, Pope Francis dedicated a Vatican property—the Palazzo Migliori—as a homeless shelter. Pope Francis’s decision marks the culmination of many papal pronouncements, especially his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si’, which provides a set of principles focused on taking care of both the environment and “the least of our brethren.” In this article, I engage in a rhetorical analysis of the pope’s theological and political framework based on what End…

  • Critical theory as Post-Marxism

Dustin Garlitz, Joseph P Zompetti•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2021•Cited by: 3

Critical theory as a Post-Marxist discourse is a category of academic thought that broadly involves theoretical scholarship aimed at interrogating the structures and discourses of power. As such, i

  • Twitter, incivility, and presidential communication

Lauren Bratslavsky, Nathan Carpenter et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2019

By approaching civility as an operational logic for democracy, we ask how incivility is a strategy related to power and domination, particularly from the president of the United States. We propose that Twitter is part of an infrastructure of incivility, through which structures and discursive mechanisms contribute to a devaluation of normative democratic discourses. Spectacle provides a theoretical framework to contextualize the forces at play in…

  • The Cultural and Communicative Dynamics of Capital

Joseph P Zompetti, Joseph Zompetti•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Modern Studies•2012

Consumer capitalism has the perfunctory, if not proverbial, explanation that if only people work hard enough will they obtain what they deserve. For Gramsci, and others, this condition isn't about who is working ‘hard enough’, but rather ‘who is working’ (and what type of work!)? The fundamental problem with our class consciousness is that it is skewed: Culturally we believe that some people are more deserving than others. What does this have to …

  • Toward a Gramscian critical rhetoric

    Joseph P Zompetti•ARTICLE•Western Journal of Communication•1997

Although Gramsci's application to the communication discipline has received incomplete consideration, Gramsci can provide an insightful perspective on the cultural dominance of rhetoric and the formation of a critical telos. Under the framework of telos, this paper argues that Gramsci's work can make a valuable contribution to our understanding of critical rhetoric. This analysis demonstrates that Gramscian notions can extend critical rhetoric in…
