  • Mummified Burial of a Child From the Saryg-Bulun Burial Ground (Central Tuva). New Data From Archaeology, Radiography, Anthropology and Genetics

    Open Access•Мarina Kilunovskaya, В А Семенов et al.•ARTICLE•Ural Historical Journal•2021

In 1988 on the right bank of the Yenisei River in Central Tuva, two burial mounds from the Saryg-Bulun burial ground were excavated. Burial No 5 attracted special attention of archaeologists — it contained the partially mummified remains of a child with a rich and unusual inventory (bow, quiver with arrows, a hat, engraving on a wooden handle) in a wooden block. A recent genetic analysis made it possible to establish, contrary to expectations, th…

  • Buckles from Siberian jet in burials of the Xiongnu epoch of the 2nd–1st century BC in Tuva

Open Access•Мarina Kilunovskaya, Pavel Leus et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological News•2020

This paper is devoted to a rare type of archaeological finds, i. e. large buckles from Siberian jet with engraving and incrustation found at sites of the Xiongnu period over a broad territory from Manchuria to the Lower Volga region. The centre of their origin and distribution was probably in the north of Inner Asia which was the proveni- ence of the material itself for making the buckles — boghead coal or Siberian jet. Its main deposits are conc…

    Open Access•Мarina Kilunovskaya•ARTICLE•Oriental Courier•2019

Tuva, a landlocked, sparsely populated region and once a province of Imperial China, is now one of Russia’s republics. Archaeological research here started already in the beginning of the 20th century, and its second half saw a number of impressive finds, such as the Acheulean paleolithic industry and the dig at the site of the Arzhan kurgan (burial mound), the oldest Scythian monument in Eurasia. Extensive archaeological research carried out acr…

This article presents the results of a multidisciplinary study of Beloye Ozero-3—an early nomadic cemetery in the Turan-Uyuk intermountain trough in Tuva, southern Siberia. The radiocarbon analysis of wood from four of its mounds suggests that they were constructed 2565–2390 (calibrated, 1σ), or 2465–2380 (uncalibrated) years ago. In four mounds with a complex construction, burials in timber frames, spoil heap, and the peripheral ring were overla…
