Antifungal and antibacterial activity of some medicinal plants used traditionally in Kenya
Jacqueline I, Okemo P, Maingi J, Bii C. 2018. Antifungal and antibacterial activity of some medicinal plants used traditionally in Kenya. Asian J Ethnobiol 2: 75-90. Many plants have been used by various communities in Kenya in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections but they have not been validated. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of some medicinal plants used by various communities in Kenya that treat the selected b…
Antibacterial activity of Tabernaemontana stapfiana Britten (apocynaceae) extracts
Antibacterial and phytochemical screening of methanolic, sequential extracts (hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol) and alkaloid rich fractions of Tabernaemontana stapfiana Britten was carried out. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, tannins and saponins that have been associated with antimicrobial activity. The stem and root bark methanolic extracts showed good activity against the …
Antimicrobial activity of pentacyclic triterpenes isolated from Acacia mellifera
Acacia mellifera has been used widely in traditional African medicines against various diseases. Among the Kipsigis community of Kenya, water extracts from the plant is used for the treatment of skin diseases, coughs and gastrointestinal ailments. The aim of the study was to provide scientific rationale for the use of the plant in traditional medicine through bioassay-guided fractionation of A. mellifera stem bark. Bioactivity testing was done ag…
