  • Missing Objects and Affective Fragments

    Open Access•Johanna Pohtinen•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2026

In this article, I explore how queer heritage can be created in museums through fragments. I apply the concept of reparative curating to demonstrate how fragmented heritage can be ‘patched up’ and mapped through affective means. I examine this in the context of an exhibition at the Helsinki City Museum called M/S Baltic Queers – Experiences of LGBTQAI+ Migration. Through interviews, observation, and by using the exhibition as research material, I…

  • Tunteet, jännitteet ja valta museoiden yhteiskuratointihankkeissa

    Open Access•Inkeri Hakamies, Johanna Pohtinen et al.•ARTICLE•Suomen Museo-Finskt Museum•2025

Museoiden yhteiskunnallisessa roolissa on viime vuosina korostuneet pyrkimykset moniäänisyyteen ja avoimuuteen. Yksi tapa toteuttaa näitä tavoitteita on yhteiskuratointi eri muodoissaan. Tarkastelemme artikkelissamme yhteiskuratoinnille annettuja merkityksiä ja siinä ilmeneviä valtasuhteita. Katsauksemme tuo uudella tavalla esille myös tunteiden merkityksen museotyössä. Onnistunut yhteiskuratointi edellyttää museoammattilaisilta uudenlaista osaam…

  • Track Changes

    Open Access•Inés Matres, Johanna Pohtinen•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Fennica•2019

Around 900 delegates of the International Society of Ethnology and Folklore (SIEF) chose the mecca of European pilgrimage to celebrate this year's biennial congress. The tracks that pilgrims leave in their journey were chosen as a metaphor, to reflect on the marks that humans leave behind, which are observed and analysed by our research community. The congress title 'Track Changes' refers to transformations that both the word and our discipline are…

  • From Secrecy to Pride

    Open Access•Johanna Pohtinen•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Fennica•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 6

In this article, I discuss how the kink identity is constructed in a society where kink is defined as non-normative and stigmatised. I do this through an af- fective reading of my research material: autobiographical writings by kinky identified individuals. By looking at the affects, I have been able to recognize those elements that are integral to the kink experience. Affective states, such as fear of being found out, frustration, loneliness, ho…
