    Open Access•Olga Davydova‐minguet, Pirjo Pöllänen•ARTICLE•International Migration•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the Finnish–Russian migratory context, return migration does not exist as such. In this article, we examine the non‐return migration of Russian‐speaking elderly migrants through the lens of the transnational everyday. The transnational everyday of Russians in Finland has, until recently, enabled their back‐and‐forth trips from Finland to Russia. The combination of Finnish and Russian migratory regimes, welfare policies, closeness of places of …

  • Long Farewell

    Open Access•Olga Davydova-Minguet, Olga Davydova‐minguet et al.•ARTICLE•Revue européenne des migrations…•2023•References: 29

The article analyses the confusions around dealing with death-related bureaucracies that Russian-speaking immigrants living in Finland's border areas have to carry out. Death of their loved ones puts migrants in contact with officials of different levels in their Finnish localities of dwelling and Russian localities of origin. The fulfilment of all bureaucratic requirements feels unfamiliar and laborious and turns to a "long farewell" in the expe…

  • Precarious Transnationality in Family Relations on the Finnish-Russian Border during the Soviet and Post-Soviet Periods

    Open Access•Olga Davydova‐minguet, Pirjo Pöllänen•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The article develops the view of transnational familyhood as an affect of precarity. Transnationality itself is viewed as being defined by state actors and border regimes which make transnational connections fragile and vulnerable. The precarity is compared here with “the lease that is not in your pocket”. The text assembles the authors’ ethnographic work in Finnish-Russian border areas from two decades. Using the methodology of narrative ethnogr…

    Open Access•Maarit Sireni, Pirjo Pöllänen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The rural region of North Karelia is located close to the Finnish-Russian border, and faces challenges due to population decline and labor shortage. However, it has a unique strength which is its proximity to Russia. This paper analyses the perceived role of immigration in enhancing the vitality of North Karelia. It investigates how the impact of immigration is presented in the regional media, and how Russian-speaking immigrant women's roles as "…

  • Performing Memory in Conflicting Settings

    Open Access•Olga Davydova‐minguet•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2021•Cited by: 2

This article discusses public and mediatized memory politics concerning Word War II in Finland, particularly its transnational dimensions brought about by post-Soviet immigration from the former Soviet Union. Despite the ongoing multiculturalization of Finnish society, where Russian speakers have become the largest immigrant group, Finnish national identity is still constructed around the idea of national independence and its heroic defence. Finn…

  • Extensions of Transnational Death

    Open Access•Olga Davydova‐minguet•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Fennica•2020

Death is traditionally perceived as a "rooting" phenomenon, connecting dying with communities and creating continuities in time and place. What happens when connections with places, communities, and histories marked by "roots" are affected by migration, conflict, revolution, war, and border shifts -all developments that are increasingly common in today's world?Transnational Death meritoriously delves into death-related processes in this era of mob…

  • Mediated Mobility and Mobile Media

    Olga Davydova-Minguet, Olga Davydova‐minguet et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Finnish Studies•2019•Cited by: 4

Systems of communication and media are an important area of mobilities research. Because of the digitalization of media and changes in other social institutions, mobility and migration are not only stimulated by the media, but also people who are on the move and who settle in new locations are affected by transnational and overlapping digital spheres, which relate them both socially and emotionally. Transnational media use produces communities, b…

  • Welfare, Work and Migration from a Gender Perspective

    Open Access•Pirjo Pöllänen, Olga Davydova-Minguet et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Since the collapse of the Soviet system, many significant changes have occurred, not only in the former socialist countries, but also in western societies. One remarkable change is the mass of post-Soviet emigration from the former Soviet Union.
