Misplaced optimism or a missed opportunity? Child welfare policies of a latecomer country, Finland 1918–36
Children as Cartographers: Lived and Narrated Childhood Experience of Urban Environment in Post-Second World War Helsinki
This article examines children’s spatial experience in post–Second World War Helsinki, a period marked by accelerating urban change. The post-war period also saw a growing interest in children’s emotional competences and independent mobility. In the writing competition organized in all Helsinki schools in association with the city’s jubilee year in 1950, children were invited to reflect and share their urban experiences. Using children’s school e…
Safety between the lines – the role, meaning and practice of pen-pal writing in the life of a young Finnish evacuee girl (1939–1945)
This article examines the role, meaning, and practice of letter writing in the lives of two Finnish girls during the Second World War (WWII). We use a particular set of letters (N = 41) from the wartime letter collection kept in the Tampere University Folklife Archives and argue that they give us an interesting perspective on not only the girls' wartime experiences, but also on the role of communication and pen-pal writing in everyday life. In pa…
Rebuilding emotional ties for child evacuees returning from abroad: Children’s literature and informal education in post-Second World War Finland
During the Second World War, Nordic countries witnessed a large-scale displacement of the population as around 70,000 Finnish children were evacuated to other Nordic countries. While up to 15,000 of them did not return to Finland, the majority travelled back, carrying multiple ruptures in their close relationships: first from their biological parents and then from foster parents. Accordingly, a wide spectrum of feelings such as grief and sadness,…
Shame and silences: Children’s emotional experiences of insecurity and violence in postwar Finnish families
The Second World War had long-lasting impacts on families in all of the belligerent countries involved, including Finland. Parents’ preoccupations with their own worries and war-related mental health problems increased the risk of inadequate parenting and domestic violence. In Finland, this subject was relegated to the margins of history writing and public remembrance for decades. However, since the 1990s the experience of troubled family life ha…
Conducting Commissioned Research: The Finnish Inquiry into the Failures of Child Welfare, 1937–1983
In 2013, the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health commissioned a testimony-driven inquiry into failings in child welfare in 1937–1983. An academic research team was appointed to produce data on maltreatment (knowledge production), to identify and recognize injustice (moral objective), and to recommend improvents in child welfare services (developmental objective). This article discusses the Inquiry and scrutinizes the strengths and weakn…
Cos I’m a Survivor
In post-war Finland thousands of children experienced poor upbringing, neglect and abuse, and had to deal with their experiences without social support from adults. In this article we study how difficult and bitter experiences related to childhood crises are remembered, reinterpreted and reframed in later life and in contemporary Finland. As research material we use both oral and written reminiscences of childhood in the post-war years collected …
Marriage Guidance, Women and the Problem(S) of Returning Soldiers in Finland, 1944–1946
When former military chaplains began to give marital guidance to troubled couples after the end of hostilities with the Soviet Union (1941–1944) in Finland, new information about the causes and experiences of marital problems and divorces emerged during guidance sessions. Even lengthy marriages were seen to be burdened due to the stress of reunion and men’s wartime infidelity, increased inclination to drinking and aggressive behaviour. The articl…
