Posthuman Visual Methods in Multispecies Ethnographies: 360-Degree Cameras as Field Companions and Human-Technological Enhancements
This article examines 360-degree cameras as tools that advance posthuman methods utilized during multispecies ethnographic fieldwork. In Finnish Lapland, we recorded immersive footage with a 360-degree camera during 19 go-along interviews with humans, and observations of their Siberian and Alaskan huskies working in sled dog tourism contexts. We conceptualize the 360-degree camera as a field companion and a human-technological enhancement that ca…
Aesthetic Encounters, Canines, and Care: New Multispecies Methodological Avenues in Organizational and Business Ethics
How can we ethically include nonhuman animals during methodological considerations in organizational and business ethics research? Additionally, what methodological opportunities and challenges do multispecies research approaches present for these research areas? Building on critical posthumanist theory, the feminist ethic-of-care tradition in animal ethics, and the aesthetics of posthuman methodologies, this article develops a novel avenue for m…
One Welfare: Rethinking well-being in Organization Studies through a multispecies lens
In this Connexions essay, we advance a multispecies research agenda for theorizing well-being within Organization Studies (OS). Research must urgently move beyond the bounded human subject to consider the power-laden, relational, and interconnected multispecies dynamics through which everyday well-being practices, and their absences, are (re)produced within organizational practices. As an interdisciplinary team of scholars from Animal Organizatio…
Acting up for animals: A (R)evolution for the business school
Business schools (BS) can be seen as a microcosm of the neoliberalist society upholding 4P’s of patriarchy, power, profit and privilege. Through autoethnographic illustrations this Acting up! essay uses a Critical Animal Studies lens and contributes to the emerging field of Animal Organization Studies analyzing the underlying ideals that hinder interspecies solidarity in business and organization. I argue for interconnectivity, a decolonializing …
When Disaster Hits, Dissonance Fades: Callings and Crisis at an Animal Shelter
This chapter develops understanding of human-animal work (HAW). Work with animals may include ‘dirty work’ laced by physical, social, moral, and emotional taints such as killing those cared for. Much animal care-based work includes a work calling to help animals while the reality can be conflictual for workers, creating paradox and dissonance. The chapter is based on an insider affective multispecies ethnography in an animal shelter when a sudden…
Human–Animal Relations in Business and Society: Advancing the Feminist Interpretation of Stakeholder Theory
Stakeholder theory has largely been anthropocentric in its focus on human actors and interests, failing to recognise the impact of nonhumans in business and organisations. This leads to an incomplete understanding of organisational contexts that include key relationships with nonhuman animals. In addition, the limited scholarly attention paid to nonhumans as stakeholders has mostly been conceptual to date. Therefore, we develop a stakeholder theo…
The Oxford Handbook of Animal Organization Studies
This interdisciplinary book lays out the contours of a new academic discipline, Animal Organization Studies, thus answering timely calls for more attention to nonhuman life in traditionally human-centred fields in social science. The book first immerses the reader in the history of human-animal relationships within a commercial context, as well as opening critique thereof and speculating on future lines of enquiry and the possibility of epistemol…
Killing Them 'Softly: Exploring Work Experiences in Care-Based Animal Dirty Work
Working with animals is a daily occurrence for millions of people who often complete tasks which are tainted, in spite of the work being seen as essential in modern society. Animal shelter-work is such an occupation. This article contributes to a deeper understanding of the caring-killing paradox (a dissonance that workers face when killing animals they are also caring for), through an insider ethnographic study. We find that care-based animal di…
Can Methods Do Good
In this conversational essay, three scholars working in the field of human—animal studies discuss the multi—species work that is underway in ethnology. Examples of different methodological approaches are highlighted; multispecies ethnography, crystallization, feminist dog-writing and écriture feminine. By reflecting on the value of such techniques, the authors contend that a renewed enthusiasm for methodological innovation can pave the way for mo…
"The "Green Mile: Crystallization Ethnography in an Emotive Context
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to discuss emotions within a highly emotive organizational setting through the use of crystallization. The authors contend that the expression of a researcher's positionality as a presence within their research is crucial in contexts where conventional research approaches are unable to capture the depth of the phenomenon under study. The paper argues that the presentation of research findings from highly emot…
