Ethnographic reflexivity and the art of giving voice to children
In recent years, researchers in childhood studies have pushed forward a critical agenda of revising the founding concepts of the field, that is, voice, agency, and participation. This implies engaging in a dialogue with those theoretical strands which decenter the subject and dissect the production of knowledge. In line with these trends, in this article, I engage with the poststructuralist frame in order to highlight the notions of relationality…

Psychiatrization of adoption practices in contemporary Poland
In this article, I propose to take a closer look at the practices of kinning in the context of adoption in contemporary Poland. I am interested in the social production of this 'unfamiliar kind of kinship' and the positions of various actors involved in defining the "adoptable" children and the "families of excess" capable of adopting. My focus will be on the ways in which the psy-knowledge and practices are implied in these social processes of d…
Potknięcie. Etnograficznie o psychiatryzacji dzieci i młodzieży w kontekście adopcji zamkniętej w Polsce
In the text, I look at the processes of psychiatrization as they unfold within social policies implemented in Poland. The presented ethnographic description focuses on the institution of adoption. I am telling the story of a young girl adopted as an infant. By creating an ethnographic commentary on the story, I raise the issues of epistemic inequalities, diagnostic cultures, biological reductionism and biopolitical bureaucracy. Methodologically, …
Psychiatrization of, with and by children
When discussed in the context of diagnosing or medicating children, psychiatrization is usually portrayed as a more or less monolithic top-down process, which, according to some, enables a child’s right to health, while for others is a form of child abuse. This article challenges these conceptualizations in two steps: First, it draws on available literature on psychiatrization (including its top-down and bottom-up operations, and its ideological …
Neurotechnology Goes to Polish School. An Ethnographic Story About Scanning ADHD
In a public primary school in a middle sized Polish town, research was conducted in which a number of children were diagnosed with a new tool for identifying ADHD. This situation serves as the point of departure for an ethnographic reflection devoted to contemporary practices of diagnosing children's mental health. The screening programs, which are more frequently permeating Polish schools, generate a category of "patients-in-waiting", who can be…
