  • Differences within global movements

    Open Access•Aron Buzogány, Dániel Mikecz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2026•References: 65

Research on the global climate movement underlines the importance of learning and diffusion processes for adopting similar master frames and movement tactics. At the same time, participation research suggests regionally different patterns of mobilisation and protest behaviour. Due to different historical socialisation processes, Western and Eastern European citizens show differences in political activity despite some signs of convergence. This ar…

  • Diffusion processes and unfavourable opportunity structures – the case of Black Lives Matter mobilisations in Poland

    Piotr Kocyba, Piotr P Płucienniczak•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural and…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In Poland, as in many other countries, BLM protests were organised in mid-2020. Even though the BLM mobilisation in Poland was small compared to many Western European societies, it is remarkable that it took place in spite of the unfavourable opportunity structures, including the regressive mainstream under the current right-wing government. The most important success of the mobilisation was the new initiation of a debate on racial discrimination…

  • Black Lives Matter and the new wave of anti-racist mobilizations in Europe

Open Access•J Beaman, Nicole Doerr et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural and…•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This Special Issue investigates the European Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests that followed the protests in the USA against police brutality in the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing in May 2020. It takes an interdisciplinary theoretical perspective, interested in cultural and political contexts and the mechanism of how street protests and social movements influence public debates. It shows in various dimensions how the BLM mobilisation transfo…

  • Teilnehmende des „Marsches für die Freiheit“ der polnischen Anti-Impf-Bewegung – Ergebnisse einer Protestbefragung

    Open Access•Piotr Kocyba•ARTICLE•Totalitarismus und Demokratie•2022

Based on a protest survey conducted in October 2021, this paper will have a close look at a Corona protest organized by the Polish antivaccination movement. The focus of interest is the question of who joins such an event and why. In doing so, the data paint a picture of protesters who place their individual rights above pandemic-related restrictions. The attitude felt by many in this movement is one of disdain for the danger posed by the virus, …

  • Empathy and Mutuality in Qualitative Research

    Open Access•Piotr Kocyba, M Muszel et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Polona•2022•References: 32

This article discusses the authors' reflections on empathy in the context of fieldwork on feminist activism in small towns in Poland and Eastern Germany. Our methodological reflection is further enriched by our referencing of challenges faced in researching activists mobilising for protests against COVID-19 measures. While the role and impact of an empathic approach to data collection and interpretation have been controversial since the 'erklären…
