Personal data as pseudo-property: Between commodification and assetisation
The paper discusses how personal data is a crucial resource in the digital age. It explores the complex nature of the economic valorisation of personal data. Recent discussions have focused on the commodification and profit generation from personal data and its role as an asset and a source of rent. Property rights play a significant but contradictory role in each of these cases. From a technical standpoint, personal data does not fall under trad…
Beyond crony capitalism: Financialization, flexible actors and private power in transition economies-the case of Agrokor
In this article, we provide a critique of the concept of crony capitalism as the dominant explanation of change in economies in transition-based as it is on an idealized technocratic representation of 'free markets'. We do this through an analysis of the fall of the Croatian company Agrokor, one of the most important companies in post-socialist Southeast Europe. The Agrokor case allows for an understanding of state-economy restructurings in times…
Social Forms Beyond Value: Public Wealth and Its Contradictions
Revisiting the history of the development of software and communication technologies, this article demonstrates that while the early techno-utopian theories have been balanced by more sombre approaches, the emancipatory potential of productions whose outputs do not take the commodity form deserves further theoretical reflection. Social form and value-form literature provides a way to rethink publicly financed activities and activities of software…
The Political Economy of Digital Monopolies: Contradictions and Alternatives to Data Commodification
Digital platforms have come under intense scrutiny from scholars, policy makers, regulators, and the general public for their immense and yet largely opaque influence on the social and economic sphere. This book advances value-form and social-form directions in Marxian theory, moving beyond mainstream economic reasoning that informs much of the debate. Digital monopoly platforms such as Google and Facebook are analysed in light of their profit se…
The Political Economy of Digital Monopolies: Contradictions and Alternatives to Data Commodification
At a time when the practices of technology companies continue to attract fierce criticism, this book asks what it actually means to hold a 'monopoly' in the tech world and how it might affect the way in which an organization operates. Combining new and traditional Marxian perspectives, the authors offer an in-depth analysis of how these technology giants are produced, financialized, and regulated. As technology firms continue to shape our politic…
Expertise and the moral economies of austerity
At the height of the Greek debt crisis in June 2015, Slovak Finance Minister Peter Kažimir tweeted that the Greek government had to “stop politicising the issue” (@KazimirPeter, 19 June 2015). Appe
Governmentality verus moral economy: Notes on the debt crisis
In this paper we revisit the concepts of governmentality and moral economy in the context of subordinate or dependent financialization. Michel Foucault and E.P. Thompson have introducted these concepts in order to capture the operational principles of liberal order in the moment of collision struggle with “anti-liberal” discursive forms such as moral economy of the poor or Keynesian economics. Furthermore, both of these concepts aim at capturing …

Exploring Commons Theory for Principles of a Socialist Governmentality
Acknowledging that the concept of the commons is increasingly considered valuable for uniting left struggles, we develop the theory of the commons by strengthening its link with a Marxist critique of capitalism. In order to do so, we draw parallels between the work of Elinor Ostrom on principles of sustainable governance and Branko Horvat’s theory of self-management developed in the context of socialist Yugoslavia. We employ Foucault’s concept of…

Models, fictions and explanations: A study in historical epistemology of economics
This paper examines the standard criticism of the neoclassical economic theory that takes mathematical formalism and the practice of modelling as the most problematic aspect of orthodox economics. The aim of the paper is to explore the epistemic properties of models in science (particularly in economics), and to incorporate the insights from the recent debates in the philosophy of science into the framework of historical epistemology of economics…
