  • "When the last gunshot’s cry falls silent": Archaeological Investigation of the "Convoy of the Thirty-Five (Lamed-Heh)" (January 14-16, 1948)

    Open Access•Rafael Y Lewis, Eyal Marco•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

The Convoy of the Thirty-Five ( Lamed-Heh ), whose members were killed while attempting to reach the besieged Gush Etzion bloc on January 15–16, 1948, occupies a central place in Israeli collective memory. However, despite extensive historical and commemorative scholarship, the material remains of the battlefield itself have received no systematic archaeological investigation. This article presents the results of a four-year program of battlefiel…

  • An Aramaic-Inscribed Cultic Object from Tulûl Mas‘ud, Elyakhin

Rafael Y Lewis, Nir Finkelstein et al.•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2024

A copper-alloy object bearing an incised Aramaic inscription in lapidary script was found on the surface, about halfway up the hill of Tulûl Mas‘ud, in the Sharon plain. The object was recently studied by a multidisciplinary research group of specialists in archaeology, epigraphy, forensic science and analytical archaeology to better understand the artifact in its original cultural and spatial setting. The results attest that the object was proba…

  • A Methodological Framework for the Archaeology of Conflicts in the Southern Levant, and the Battle of Hattin (July 3–4, 1187)

    Rafael Y Lewis•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2024

This article presents a research framework for the Archaeology of Conflicts/Battlefield Archaeology. This work was motivated by the methodological challenge posed by the very attempt to study material evidence of events of short duration in the landscape. Such events occurred outside the boundaries of conventional archaeological sites, in the landscape, which is generally subject to more frequent changes. The theoretical model is presented throug…

  • Metallurgical Characterization of a Copper-Alloy Aramaic-Inscribed Object from Tulûl Mas‘ud (Elyakhin)

    Open Access•D Ashkenazi, Rafael Y Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Humans•2022•References: 15

An Aramaic-inscribed object made of copper-alloy was discovered in 1993 in the south-western part of Tulûl Mas‘ud (Moshav Elyakhin) and has recently been studied using an archaeometallurgical approach. Based on visual testing and multifocal light microscopy observation, the object was probably produced in a nearby workshop, with the inscription engraved using a sharp tool during the production process. Given the larger assemblage of inscribed cop…

  • The Tale of a ‘Tailing Pile’: The role of a Palaeolithic flint extraction and reduction site in the Frankish defeat in the Battle of Hattin, 1187

Rafael Y Lewis, Rona S Avissar Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Landscapes•2020

The Horns of Hattin and its surrounding fields in the Lower Galilee is most famous as the scene of the Battle of Hattin (4 July 1187), during which the forces of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of the Muslims led by Saladin. Based on a large-scale landscape archaeology study and with focused prehistoric research, we present a three-step explanation for the outcome of the battle: 1. Lower and Middle Palaeolit…

  • Survival and detection of blood residues on stone tools

    Open Access•J A Eisele, D D Fowler et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1995•Cited by: 8•References: 23

A new field is opening up in biological archaeology, as it is found that ancient DNA and other bio-molecules may-under the right conditions-survive over the long term. Is the same true of blood residues on stone tools
