  • Antisemitism on Social Media Since October 7, 2023

    Rachel E Silverman•ARTICLE•Jewish Film & New Media An…•2023

The October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and the resulting war with Gaza has shifted social media experiences of antisemitism in innumerable and catastrophic ways. This analysis of Instagram uses the frameworks of new antisemitism, epistemic antisemitism, and a lethal combination of the two: de-marginalized antisemitism, that fetishizes Palestinians as the ideal subaltern to situate the ways in which Jew hatred manifests daily online. This essay ar…

  • Memorializing Pulse

    Rachel E Silverman•ARTICLE•Departures in Critical…•2021

Since 2016, the city of Orlando, FL, has remembered the Pulse nightclub massacre through memorial projects honoring the victims and survivors. The process of remembering and memorializing trauma is contentious; debates over how, where, who, and what to remember are about emotions, economics, and politics. Knowing that meaning making and memory are ongoing processes, I use the circuit of culture model to navigate my city’s processes and places of …

    Open Access•Rachel E Silverman, Kristin Comeforo•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2020•References: 26

This auto-theoretical essay explores femme and butch as differential identities, expressed through the very specific gender performances of lesbian identity-fem(me)ininity and mas(k)ulinity. We revisit a night spent together as a means of cocreating the understanding of lesbian habitus and the space lesbians occupy when they come together sexually. We interrogate what this means for our own gender performances and expressions of power both within…

The shared experience of invisibility and the related perils and privileges that come with passing as straight enact a bond unlike any either of us have previously experienced. Meeting within the context of a polyamorous relationship adds a layer of complexity to our friendship that deepens the rela…

  • Everything Is Different the Second Time Around”: The Stigma of Temporality on Orange Is the New Black

    Open Access•Rachel E Silverman, Emily D Ryalls•ARTICLE•Television & New Media•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 12

Orange Is the New Black (OITNB) offers Netflix viewers the chance to go behind bars and see the Prison Industrial Complex from the inside. Described by creator Jenji Kohan as “my activism,” OITNB showcases the reprehensible treatment of elderly female prisoners, while simultaneously adhering to age-old tropes of femininity as manipulative. Using Goffman’s work on stigma as a framework, we examine representations of elderly women on OITNB, while a…

    Rachel E Silverman•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Popular…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This article examines the character Charlotte York from Sex and the City to argue for the performativity of Jewish identity. During season six, Charlotte converts to Judaism; throughout her conversion and ensuing Jewish life, Charlotte is forced to reiterate Jewishness on her person in order to mark herself as Jewish. Because of the normative assumption of Christianity on television and in real life in Western culture, Charlotte’s Jewishness is r…
