  • Fântâna în contextul unor percepții ecologice, sanitare și etnoculturale

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2026

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2026

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2025

While passing through or staying for a longer period in Moldova and Muntenia, foreign travelers of the 19th century left behind historically and ethnoculturally significant works for their descendants. • Unbegotten water” – magic remedy, springing from the well of Jordan

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2024

In Romanian folk medicine, unbegotten water was used as a magic remedy to treat illnesses and soul troubles. The sources of unbegotten water were clean springs, flowing waters, morning dew and Jordan’s fountain, the last one having this quality due to the sanctification of the waters on Epiphany, the tradition being also called Jordan (6/19 January). On this day all wells, houses and everything around them, and graves, were sprinkled with holy wa…

  • The water well and the well sinker

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2024

In traditional perceptions, the water well was seen primarily as a source of drinking water, a source of life-giving water for humans and animals in the household. The word fântână is of Latin origin, with its root word fons (pl. fontis), meaning spring, origin, beginning. The technical construction of the well consisted of a series of components and stages to be carried out by the well sinker, assisted by the villagers involved in the activity. …

  • Enchantresses and Enchanters Through the Personalizing of “Magical Agents

Open Access•Valentin Arapu, Natalia Gradinaru•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2023

The personalized interdisciplinary approach to the enchantresses and enchanters as “magical agents” is intended to highlight the imagological aspects of their lives and work. Multiple stereotypes have become entrenched in society towards enchantresses and enchanters, many of them more related to people’s imaginations than to concrete historical realities. In Romania’s past, the number of enchantresses and enchanters in each locality was quite hig…

  • Corruption and confrontation of the plague in folklore

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2022

In Romanian folklore, the personified Plague has the image of an evil creature that devours people without mercy, eating them literally. The demonic face of the plague, with its skeletal appearance in iconographic art, comes to feed the phobias of people, frightened by the fatal weapons of the plague: sword, scythe or sickle. Two diametrically opposed perceptions of the impact of the Plague on people's lives persist in folklore sources. According…

  • Plague – ”The Turkish disease

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2021

The article addresses the issue of the traditional Romanian perception of the plague as ”Turkish disease” and presents relevant historical, theological, ethnological and epidemiological information. This perception is based on the memory of the frequent wars waged by the Ottomans on Romanian territory; wars during which contagious diseases were recurrent, and implicitly the plague. In historiography, the invocation of the plague epidemics in the …

    Open Access•Valentin Arapu•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2021•References: 1

The pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has multiple unknown sides, various hypotheses regarding the causes of this plague being launched. One of the hypotheses, circulating both in science and in the media, concerns a series of animals, carriers of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, subsequently transmitted through other animals to humans. Bats are among the possible mammals that are targeted in such contamination, but there is no clear evidence in this …
