  • Accounting for the Normative Force of Project-Dependent Reasons

    Open Access•Monika Betzler•ARTICLE•Philosophy•2025

The goal of this chapter is to explain the normative force of personal projects and the project-dependent reasons they generate. Scheffler argues that it is not wrong to ignore project-dependent reasons. I point to three considerations that aim to show, pace Scheffler, that it is wrong to simply ignore the project-dependent reasons we once acknowledged. First, it is a condition for valuing a particular project that we have reasons to continue to …

  • Ending a special relationship: Toward an ethics of divorce

    Open Access•Monika Betzler•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Quarterly•2024•References: 34

Romantic partnerships are typically among the most important goods in our lives. But love sometime ends, and so too do relationships. Divorcing partners are particularly vulnerable to being wronged and harmed. The aim of this paper is to develop an ethics of divorce, by establishing that divorce is a condition for the possibility of the distinct value of romantic partnerships. Different sets of rights are specified here: the divorcee's right to e…

  • The Moral Significance of Adolescence

    Open Access•Monika Betzler•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Philosophy•2022

This article examines whether there is a morally relevant difference between adolescents and adults even if both are similarly autonomous. Understanding that difference accounts for the particular moral significance of adolescence and explains what we owe to adolescents as individual members of that age group. I first raise the plausibility of this morally relevant difference by highlighting the difficulties that any attempts would face which try…

  • Verschwörungstheorien in Zeiten der Pandemie: Zur Bedeutung ethischer Standards im Prozess politischer Meinungsbildung. On the Importance of Ethical Standards in Political Deliberation

    Monika Betzler•ARTICLE•Archiv für Rechts- und…•2021

To what extent can conspiracy theories be understood as a political challenge in these pandemic times? In order to discuss this issue, I provide an explication of the term ‘conspiracy theory’ that allows it to be applied in an epistemically elucidating and politically fruitful way. Against this backdrop, I will demonstrate how conspiracy theories violate, among other things, the ethically relevant standards that are established through well-order…

  • Collegial Relationships

Open Access•Monika Betzler, Jörg Löschke•ARTICLE•Ethical Theory and Moral Practice•2021

Although collegial relationships are among the most prevalent types of interpersonal relationships in our lives, they have not been the subject of much philosophical study. In this paper, we take the first step in the process of developing an ethics of collegiality by establishing what qualifies two people as colleagues and then by determining what it is that gives value to collegial relationships. We argue that A and B are colleagues if both exh…

  • Shared Belief and the Limits of Empathy

    Open Access•Monika Betzler, Simon Keller•ARTICLE•Pacific philosophical quarterly•2021

To show affective empathy is to share in another person's experiences, including her emotions. Most philosophers who write about emotions accept the broadly cognitivist view that emotions are rationally connected with beliefs. We argue that affective empathy is also rationally connected with belief; you can only share in another's emotions insofar as you can share certain of her beliefs. In light of that claim, we argue that affective empathy bri…

  • What is a colleague? The descriptive and normative dimension of a dual character concept

Kara Reuter, Jörg Löschke et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2020

Colleagues are not only an integral part of many people’s lives; empirical research suggests that having a good relationship with one’s colleagues is the single most important factor for being happy at work. However, so far, no one has provided a comprehensive account of what it means to be a colleague. To address this lacuna, we have conducted both an empirical as well as theoretical investigation into the content and structure of the concept ‘c…

  • Kant's Ethics of Virtue

    Monika Betzler•BOOK•Kant's Ethics of Virtue•2008

  • Kant's Ethics of Virtue

    Monika Betzler•CHAPTER•Kant's Ethics of Virtue•2008

The considerable extensions and refinements undertaken by Kant in comparison with his earlier works, above all in his Doctrine of Virtue, are shown to be of relevance to contemporary modern debates on theoretical moral questions. The papers collected in this volume each discuss Kant's central ideas in the context of his earlier writings on ethics and within the context of our contemporary ethical debates. Thus the significance and possible extent…

  • Practical conflicts: New Philosophical Essays

    Open Access•Peter Baumann, Monika Betzler•BOOK•Practical Conflicts•2004•Cited by: 2

Practical conflicts pervade human life. Agents have many different desires, goals, and commitments, all of which can come into conflict with each other. How can practical reasoning help to resolve these practical conflicts? In this collection of essays a distinguished roster of philosophers analyse the diverse forms of practical conflict. Their aim is to establish an understanding of the sources of these conflicts, to investigate the challenge th…
