  • Nierzetelny” recenzent w odpowiedzi „rzetelnemu” Historykowi (odpowiedź na replikę Dariusza A. Sikorskiego)

    Open Access•Rafał Rutkowski•ARTICLE•Historia Slavorum Occidentis•2026

This text is a response to Dariusz A. Sikorski’s response to my critical review of his book Religions of Ancient Slavs. A Guide for Seekers. The author dismissed my criticism, claiming that I lacked the competence to properly address his arguments. In my response, I demonstrate that he misrepresented my allegations and failed to defend himself against them. I focus on several specific issues, including his assessment of the works of Henryk Łowmia…

Open Access•Polska Akademia Nauk, Rafał Rutkowski•ARTICLE•Historia Slavorum Occidentis•2024

History, archaeology and ethnography as disciplines unsuitable for the study of Slavic beliefs according to Dariusz Andrzej Sikorski in his „Religions of the ancient Slavs”

  • Trimming the Tangle of Legend

    Open Access•Ben Allport, Rafał Rutkowski•ARTICLE•Acta Poloniae Historica•2024

The medieval origin narratives of both Poland and Norway feature dynastic founders who came to power following a ritualistic haircut. In the Polish tradition, Siemowit of the Piast dynasty is anointed duke after his coming-of-age haircut, which is administered by two mysterious strangers; in the Norwegian version, Harald Fairhair vows to only cut his hair after he has united the realm. In both traditions, the transfer of power to these new rulers…

  • Why Would the Skalds Not Have Lied about the Rulers’ Expeditions and Battles? Some Remarks on a Relic of Medieval Attitude toward Sources in Modern Medieval Studies

    Open Access•Rafał Rutkowski•ARTICLE•Acta Poloniae Historica•2021

The article presents a critique of a research method whereby historical sources could not have possibly lied as they were targeted at the addressees who knew the actual course of the events described or referred to. This attitude toward the sources has its antecedence in Snorri Sturluson’s argument on the reliability of skaldic poetry. To his mind, the poems were biased but still valuable, in a way, as they were declaimed before the rulers who wo…

  • Poor Oral Hygiene and High Levels of Inflammatory Cytokines in Saliva Predict the Risk of Overweight and Obesity

Open Access•Kacper Nijakowski, Anna Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The study aimed to determine if oral hygiene influences not only oral health but also potentially metabolic disorders such as overweight or obesity. Participants were 94 patients: 40 with increased body mass and 54 with normal body mass. The methods included dental examination, a questionnaire concerning hygienic habits and an assessment of selected salivary inflammatory markers. The new parameter named "cleaning index" (describing the interactio…

  • The Platonic Concept of the Memory of Ancient Deeds in the Chronicles of Master Vincentius and Theodoricus the Monk

    Open Access•Rafał Rutkowski•ARTICLE•Acta Poloniae Historica•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The article discusses the reception of the Platonic concept of memory of ancient deeds in twelfth-century historical writing in the ‘younger Europe’. It focuses on the myth of Atlantis, as described in the translation of Timaeus by Calcidius, illustrating the manner in which two twelfth-century chroniclers – Master Vincentius Kadłubek and Theodoricus Monachus – used the said myth as a structural basis for their accounts of the past of Poland and …
