    Open Access•Anna Engelking•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2024•References: 17

Three case studies depict different attitudes of anthropologists toward the politics of nationalism promoted by the prewar Polish state. Ethnographer Stanisław Dworakowski, involved in a governmental Committee for the Issues of Petty Nobility in Eastern Poland, elaborated a study on this social stratum. Although based on reliable field research, it can hardly be considered scientific work, as it has many features of political propaganda. Quite op…

  • Between the Lord and the Jew

    Open Access•Anna Engelking•ARTICLE•Acta Poloniae Historica•2014•Cited by: 2

Following an ethnographic field study, the author presents her findings on the cognitive collective identity of Belarusian kolkhozniks. Their self-definition as a group is based on the semiotic oppositions: peasant–‘lord’, peasant–Jew, and Christian–Jew, and it testifies to a longevity, or longue durée, of pre-modern mechanisms of conceptualising the social reality. The contemporary kolkhoznik defines himself as a simple (uneducated) but assiduou…

By analyzing and interpreting their narrative, the author traced the implicit values, norms, rules, basic semiotic dichotom…
