  • Sexual Life of the Half-savage. Polish Peasants’ Sexuality in the Eyes of Outside Observers

    Open Access•Tomasz Wiślicz•ARTICLE•Res Historica•2025

The distinctiveness of peasant sexuality in the Polish lands has been described at least since the beginning of modern times. Initially, it aroused the interest of the clergy, who were responsible for inculcating Christian principles, including sexual ethics, in the faithful. Other insightful observers, such as noble poets (the best example being Wacław Potocki), also recorded their observations. From the time of the Enlightenment, peasant sexual…

  • The Peasants Fleeing to „Podolia” in the 18th Century from the Perspective of Rural Documents

    Open Access•Tomasz Wiślicz•ARTICLE•Res Historica•2024

The article analyzes the phenomenon of runaway peasants in the 18th century through the prism of documents preserved in village court books. Fleeing to Podolia, which became a migratory destination after it was reincorporated into the Crown in 1699, was particularly popular in eastern Lesser Poland and the western part of the Ruthenian Voivodeship at the time. However, the preserved rural documents talk less about actual fleeing to Podolia, and m…

  • Jews “Holding the Keys to the Church” and the Posthumous Career of Zelman Wolfowicz of Drohobych

    Open Access•Tomasz Wiślicz•ARTICLE•Jewish History•2023

At the end of the nineteenth century in the historiography and popular writing of the three nationalities living in what was then Habsburg Galicia—Polish, Jewish, and Ukrainian—there was an ongoing debate about the motif of the alleged leasing of Orthodox churches by Jews in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The motif of the Jews “holding the keys to the church” was intended, in its own way, to justify the anti-Jewish nature of the Khmeln…

  • Everyday Life’ in the Works of Maria Bogucka

    Open Access•Tomasz Wiślicz•ARTICLE•Acta Poloniae Historica•2023•References: 1

The article discusses the use of the category of ‘everyday life’ in historical works by Maria Bogucka as well as her theoretical contributions on the subject. Her pioneering role in adapting the mode of popular writing advanced by the French cycle Histoire de la vie quotidienne to Polish historiography in the 1960s established a high-quality standard on Polish scholars by combining original research into economic and social history with reference…

  • Fabrykacja nierządnicy, czyli o ofiarach względnej swobody seksualnej na polskiej wsi przedrozbiorowej

    Open Access•Tomasz Wiślicz•ARTICLE•LUD Organ Polskiego Towarzystwa…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • Bunt chłopski w starostwie libuskim w latach 1755–1758

    Tomasz Wiślicz•ARTICLE•Klio•2013

During 1750s Sub-Carpathian region of Poland witnessed numerous peasant revolts. The centres of rebellion usually acted in isolation from one another, even from geographically neighbouring areas of protest. Disorders were not too intense, the use of violence occurred only rarely and rebels generally tried to give the traits of legality to their actions. One of the rebellions took place in the royal demesne of Libusza (near the city of Biecz). Loc…
