  • Necrosol as a Material Archive of Genocide

Open Access•Dawid Kobiałka, Mikołaj Smykowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Archaeology•2025•References: 13

The first months of World War II in Gdańsk Pomerania saw the mass murder of local intellectual elites, of people with mental disorders or disabilities and of representatives of the small Jewish community. The Germans usually hid the victims’ bodies in mass graves. About 30 places of execution from this “bloody autumn of 1939” were destroyed in the second half of 1944, as part of Aktion 1005, an operation to conceal evidence of the crimes. In this…

  • An Environmental Perspective on the Ethnography of Archaeological Practice

    Open Access•Mikołaj Smykowski, Dawid Kobiałka•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 13

Forensic archaeology has become highly influential branch of archaeology in Poland in recent decades. We claim that the significant element of the applied research methodology in case of exhumations should be ethnographic observations and interviews with families of the murdered, witnesses, and local communities, as well as volunteers and members of the archaeological research team. Inspired by environmental anthropology, we propose to expand the…

  • Death and life Valley. Environmental memory of the Pomeranian crime of 1939 in Chojnice

    Open Access•Mikołaj Smykowski, Dawid Kobiałka•ARTICLE•LUD Organ Polskiego Towarzystwa…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This article concerns Chojnice’s Death Valley, Poland – the execution site from the Second World War. We discuss the historical and archaeological contexts related to German mass crimes committed near the town during the war. Next, we outline the theoretical framework of our argument. The key chapters of the text are a case study that shows Death Valley also as a place full of life. Thanks to environmental anthropology, it is possible to identify…

  • Bioinkrustacje

    Open Access•Mikołaj Smykowski•ARTICLE•Przegląd Kulturoznawczy•2022

In the article I propose to critically rethink the process of biodeterioration. By following the inexorable growth of mosses and lichen species on Jewish heritage –especially the lapidarium of matzevot situated in the Rzuchowski Forest (former terrains of Waldlager Kulmhof) –I try to reconfigure the meaning of “green matzevah”and suggest the potential ways of understanding microbiological processes occurring on the surface of the tombstones from …

  • Ekoprofetyzm Diuny Franka Herberta

    Open Access•Mikołaj Smykowski•ARTICLE•Porównania•2022

Artykuł stanowi próbę ekokrytycznego odczytania fantastycznonaukowej powieści Franka Herberta zatytułowanej „Diuna”. Punktem wyjścia do rozważań nad zaprojektowaną na poziomie fikcji literackiej pustynną planetą Arrakis i jej specyficznym bezwodnym ekosystemem, jest poszukiwanie ekomimetycznych analogii wobec antropocenicznej kondycji świata obserwowanego przez autora w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. Ekoprofetyczne świadectwo epoki człowieka, za jak…

  • Material records of the Anthropocene

    Mikołaj Smykowski, Monika Stobiecka•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This paper discusses new types of naturecultural heritage that have emerged during the Anthropocene. The authors trace and analyze novel records of the ongoing geological event and propose a method of surface-oriented ethnography to investigate heritage in the Anthropocene. We argue that rethinking history in the Anthropocene means to think through new forms of heritage that emerge in the course of ecological processes of decomposition, decay and…

  • The Postholocaust Landscape of Chelmno on the Ner (Kulmhof an der Nehr)

    Mikołaj Smykowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2020

This article shows how the ecology and nature of the Rzuchów Forest (in the Rzuchów district of the Koło forestry inspectorate in Greater Poland) was indirectly affected by the extermination of the Jewish population as a result of it being used to camouflage evidence of the crimes. Tracing the environmental history of commemoration in the forested part of the former death camp at Chełmno on the Ner (Chełmno nad Nerem/ Kulmhof an der Nehr) will gi…

  • The Environmental History of the Holocaust

Jacek Małczyński, Ewa Domańska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2020•Cited by: 2

The introduction conceptualizes environmental history of the Holocaust as a subdiscipline of Holocaust studies. The authors approach this emerging field of research through the context of environmental humanities with its current interest in the Anthropocene, soil science, forensics, multispecies collectives, and explorations of relations between ecocides and genocides. Proposed approach considers post-Holocaust spaces and landscapes as specific …
