  • Tracing the Onset of Agriculture Through Phytolith Analysis at the Abora I Neolithic Settlement, Eastern Latvia

Open Access•Normunds Stivrins, Gunita Zariņa et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025

Phytolith analysis was applied for the first time in Latvian archaeology to investigate plant use at the Abora I settlement, one of the key Late Neolithic sites in the Lubāns Wetland, eastern Latvia. Phytoliths were extracted from sediments, pottery sherds, grinding stones, and human teeth in order to assess evidence for cereal-type grasses and plant processing. A diverse range of phytolith morphotypes was identified, including rondel and bilobat…

  • Dietary Practices During the Late Neolithic and the Bronze Age in the Territory of Latvia

Open Access•Vanda Visocka, Gunita Zariņa et al.•ARTICLE•Latvijas Vēstures Institūta Žurnāls•2023

This paper deals with the identification and comparison of dietary practices and their changes from the Late Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age in two different ecosystems – the lower reaches of the Daugava river and Lake Lubāns wetland. Zooarchaeological, palaeobotanical, and stable isotope evidence of chemical elements were used. The obtained results show that the beginning of early farming in Latvia can be observed in the late Neolithic period, …

  • Life histories at stone age Zvejnieki based on stable isotope profiles of tooth dentine

    Open Access•Rowena C Henderson, Gunita Zariņa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

The timing of infant weaning in the past is important for its implications for birth-spacing and infant survival, and hence for population maintenance or growth under different socio-economic regimes. Prior to the adoption of agriculture, breastfeeding is believed to have been more prolonged amongst hunter-gatherers due, at least partly, to the lack of suitable weaning foods that are available to agriculturalists. The introduction of pottery poss…

  • New Data of Funeral Customs and Burials of Bronze Age Reznes Cemetery in Latvia

Open Access•Andrejs Vasks, Gunita Zariņa et al.•ARTICLE•Estonian Journal of Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 5

The Bronze Age barrow cemetery in Reznes was located on the right bank of the River Daugava on a paleoisland. In total, eight barrows have been recorded in the cemetery. Archaeological excavations took place in the 1930s, led by E. Å turms, and in the 1950s and 1960s, led by J. Graudonis. Altogether, seven barrows have been excavated. Several barrows had secondary burials from the Late Iron Age and the historical period, thus complicating archaeo…

  • Re-Evaluating the Bronze and Earliest Iron Age in Latvia

Open Access•Dardega Legzdiņa, Andrejs Vasks et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Until recently, there was a lack of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates from the Bronze and Earliest Iron Age (1800–500–1 BC) burial sites in Latvia. The chronology of the sites was assessed on the basis of archaeological analogies with neighboring regions and typological studies of the rather meagre grave inventory. In order to establish a firm foundation for an absolute chronology of burial sites and to better understand changes in mortuary practices dur…

  • New radiocarbon dates of human and bird bones from Zvejnieki Stone Age burial ground in northern Latvia

    K Mannermaa, Ilga Zagorska et al.•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 1

A total of 317 burials, mostly from the Stone Age, have been detected in the Zvejnieki archaeological complex in northern Latvia. Animal bones are often found in Zvejnieki graves. Some of them are modified into artefacts like pendants and can be associated with the human burials as grave goods. However, the behavioural interpretation of unmodified animal bones is less straightforward. By dating human and animal bones with the radiocarbon method i…

  • The main trends in the palaeodemography of the 7th-18th century population of Latvia

    Gunita Zariņa•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2006

The study represents palaeodemographic research of osteological material of 3304 individuals from the funds of the Anthropological Laboratory of the Institute of History of the University of Latvia in Riga, dating from the 7th to the 18th century AD. Compensated life expectancy at birth is varying between 20.3 and 22.2 years during the research period. Crude mortality has changed between 49.3 and 45% per hundred. In the early period (7th-13th cen…
