  • The Thirty Years War and German Memory

    Open Access•Stephan Sander-Fae•ARTICLE•German History•2025

This essay discusses the return to mainstream scholarship of the idea of the Thirty Years War as the historical traumatization of the German nation. Although constructed by nineteenth-century historians to nationalist ends, this interpretation culminated in the middle of the twentieth century. After 1945, it initially lost its relevance, with West German historians eventually beginning, from the 1960s onwards, to reinterpret the Holy Roman Empire…

  • History of the Adriatic

    Stephan Sander-Fae•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Studies•2024

This History of the Adriatic is a wonderful book, and its author, one of the most prolific scholars of the region, has accomplished a truly magnificent feat: Egidio Ivetić has written a thoughtful, lucid, and magisterial synthesis of the Adriatic, which he calls “the Mediterranean Sea on a smaller scale” (2). Originally published in Italian under the title Storia dell’Adriatico (Bologna: Il Mulino, 2019), for its English translation—a masterpiece…

  • Beyond the Individual

    Open Access•Stephan Sander-Fae•ARTICLE•Miscellanea Hadriatica et…•2020•References: 1

This essay offers insights into Renaissance Dalmatia’s intellectual elites by focusing, first, on individual experiences to derive, second, general trends about their socio-economic group behaviour. While these include known individuals like Brne Karnarutić, Federik Grisogono, and Šime Budinić, the author argues that we should also include their less-prominent neighbours to arrive at a fuller understanding of their activities throughout, and in s…

    Open Access•Stephan Sander-Fae, Stephan Karl Sander-Fae•ARTICLE•Miscellanea Hadriatica et…•2017

This study investigates encounters in the early modern Adriatic, in particular focusing on the Venetian possessions. The predominantly Catholic Dalmatian cities were incorporated into the Venetian maritime state around the turn of the fifteenth century and were home to small but bustling communities of merchants, companies of sailors, and soldiers. During the sixteenth century, Dalmatia was both the frontline of Catholicism and a valuable turnove…
