Socio-economic complexity at the Late Chalcolithic site of Tell Helawa, Kurdistan Region of Iraq
Survey and excavation at Gird/Tell Helawa, a ca. 10-ha site located in the Erbil Plain, revealed an extensive LC 2-3 period (late 5th to mid-4th millennium BC) settlement, with domestic structures and at least one large building destroyed by fire, located on the top of the main mound. Several sealings bearing stamp seal impressions were found in the building, showing the presence of administrative activity at the site. The evidence from Helawa al…
Breaking down the bullion. The compliance of bullion-currencies with official weight-systems in a case-study from the ancient Near East
In this paper we provide an analytical insight on a specific form of bullion-currency. Through the comparison of the statistical properties of different samples of hacksilver and balance weights from various contexts of the Near Eastern Bronze Age, the study attempts to assess whether the weight values of bullion-currencies can be expected to comply with existing weight-standards. The results of the statistical analyses on a silver hoard from Ebl…
Bone and ivory manufacturing at Ebla (Syria) during the Early and Middle Bronze Age ( c. 2500–1600 BC)
The corpus of bone tools and other objects from Tell Mardikh-Ebla constitutes a basis for studying the role and development of bone working at this urban centre between 2500 BC and 1600 BC. A preliminary assessment of bone artefact production that takes into account typology, distribution, and relation with other broad functional classes of items is presented, underlining trends and changes over time. During the Early Bronze Age III–IV a specific…
Tablets, Sealings and Weights at Ebla

Cretulae come from various functional contexts, with significant concentrations only in the northern storerooms and central archive, whilst seal-impressed jars were scattered in various quarters, inclu…

Some Remarks on Mesopotamian Metrology during the Old Babylonian Period
The excavations carried out during the 1926–7 and 1930–1 seasons at Ur by C. L. Woolley brought to light two large sectors (AH and EM) of the Old Babylonian city characterized by private dwellings dating from the Larsa domination but partly re-used until the Kassite period after the destruction of the city by King Samsu-iluna of Babylon, in the eleventh year of his reign (1729 BC) (Woolley 1955: 163–94; Woolley and Mallowan 1976; see also Pinnock…
