A couple of years ago, the publishing house of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia published a monograph by Ilnur Nadirov devoted to Arab demonology. The topics touched upon in it were partly considered in the author's previous books. Despite its volume and the extreme demand for the mentioned topic among Russian-speaking readers, the work has not attracted due attention
Jinn and Divs as the Other
The present paper analyzes the origins of certain motifs of demonizing the “other” in classical Islamic tradition. It reveals the main trends in the development of this mythologem based off of textual analysis. The material for the analysis is a body of Arabic and Persian texts of different genres: history (al-Tabari, al-Juwayni, Khvandamir, Sharaf al-Din Bidlisi), geography ('adja’ib), folklore (“The Thousand and One Nights”), epic poetry (Firda…
The Ideas of Pseudo-Empedocles in Baghdad Mysticism of the Ninth-Tenth Centuries CE
This paper looks at the cosmological texts of the eminent Sufi al-Ḥusayn b. Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj (d. 309 AH/922 CE) through the prism of pseudo-Empedocles’s influence. The medieval scholar Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī al-Daylamī was the first to juxtapose pseudo-Empedoclean doctrine and al-Ḥallāj’s passionate love (maḥabba). A connection between the two was postulated by L. Massignon, who reconstructed the line of succession of the Baghdad believers in pseudo-Em…
To the 80th Anniversary of Maxim Sergeevich Kiktev
The paper is dedicated to the memory of Maxim Sergeevich Kiktev (1943–2005). The author shares his memories of Maxim Sergeevich, especially about his teaching activities. Maxim Kiktev is remembered as an erudite scholar of Arabic medieval literature. He did not publish much during his lifetime but devoted almost all his time to teaching. In addition, he was a consummate connoisseur of Russian Silver Age poetry, studying the works of Velimir Khleb…
The Institution of Zoroastrian Marriage Xwēdōdah
This paper deals with the famous Zoroastrian marriage xwēdōdah. This form of marriage refers to the conjugal union of father and daughter, mother and son, brother and sister. Zoroastrianism of the Sassanid era made this institution a key element of religion, along with offering meal (mēzd) and seasonal holidays (gāhānbār). The question of whether this institution is a part of ancient Iranian legacy or has emerged later, is still controversial amo…
Sergei Vsevolodovich Kullanda (23.08.1954 - 30.11.2020)
The paper examines the major milestones of Sergei V. Kullanda’s scientific activity and summarizes his heritage. During the first half of his career, Sergei Kullanda focused on Austronesian studies: the history of ancient Java and pre-Austronesian societies as well as Austronesian linguistics. Later Kullanda turned to Indo-European and Iranian studies: reconstruction of the Indo-European system of age and gender groups based on kinship terms, the…
From Testimony to Martyrdom
The contents of two Arabic lexemes šāhid and šahīd correspond to each other in early Islam. Šahīd means ‘martyr for the faith’ in several āyats of the Qur‘ān. This paper deals with changing the meaning ‘witness’ to ‘confessor, martyr’. At-Ṭabarī’s Tafsīr shows the equalization of šahīd and šāhid. Šahīd is rarely encountered there in meaning ‘martyr’.In al-Bukharī and Muslim’s ḥadīth, the concept of ‘martyr’ begins to acquire a specific topic. The…
The Problem of Free Will and Predestination in the Light of Satan’s Justification in Early Sufism
This article examines the story of Iblīs’s disobedience in early Sufism. The motif of justifying and condemning Satan is a characteristic feature of the ideological heritage of some Sufis. The first Sufi line estimates Satan as a sufferer and a sacrifice of God’s predestination. Al-Ḥallāj’s teaching became the climax of this tradition for early Sufism. The second line of this discourse is connected with criticism of Satan’s role. The central figu…
