Regulative production
This article introduces ‘regulative production’ to theorise regulation as a constitutive force within cultural industries. Moving beyond the production–consumption binary, it argues that regulation is not merely an external constraint but an institutional mechanism that reorganises production, circulation and genre formation. Through a historical analysis of the Japanese adult video industry, the article examines the mid-1990’s transition from th…
Do not forget the state! The supposed state free self-regulatory system in post-war Japan
This paper analyses the role of the state in the self-regulatory system in postwar Japan. While the New Censorship Theory argues that censorship is an essential and ubiquitous part of everyday communication, this paper contends that the state retains the power to impose punitive measures against authors and publishers even when censorship appears to bypass the state by becoming self-regulatory. The case of the self-regulatory system in Japan conf…
The Logic of Tong (Togetherness) or Why Guanxi Works in Chinese Societies
This article provides an analysis of the cultural meaning of guanxi (關係) in Chinese societies, specifically in the context of a workplace situation in Taiwan. Guanxi is a concept based on Confucian ethics, which was originally a positive concept connoting human closeness, has transformed into a manipulative and instrumentally used variant called “ guanxi-practice ”(關係學). The article argues that an effective way to understand the cultural meaning …
A Critical Reflection on Chinese Masculinity
This paper offers a critical review of the study of masculinity among overseas Chinese. Rather than turning to Confucianism which has been deployed as the “deep structure” for explaining Chinese masculinity, this paper argues that attention should be directed to the Chinese kinship ideology, which will prove to be a more helpful tool in conceptualizing Chinese masculinity. Through ethnographic cases in Taiwan and Hong Kong, I will show how Chines…
From texts to contexts
This paper examines how the Japanese self-regulatory systems that evolved in the aftermath of the Second World War to regulate the sexual content within Japanese films metamorphosed into a powerful state apparatus to create fear and uncertainty for those involved in making adult videos. We depict the history of Japan’s obscenity laws, from their origin as a response to Western imperialism to the self-regulatory bodies created in the post-war peri…
Japanese adult videos in Taiwan and Hong Kong
This chapter focuses on how local consumers indigenise Japanese AVs by remaking, reinventing and re-appropriating them in a Hong Kong and Taiwanese context. Cross-cultural transmission of media products throughout Asia, especially to Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, has been extensively studied over the past decade. Japanese AVs are a kind of soft-core pornography that first emerged in Japan in the early 1980s. Taiwanese men and women displa…
Japanese Adult Videos in Taiwan
This book explores the debate between those who argue that globalisation is leading to worldwide cultural homogeneity, with American cultural good predominating, and those who argue that cultural goods are always adapted and contextualised in the particular setting in which they are used. Based on extensive original research on how Japanese adult videos are consumed in Taiwan, it presents a rich picture of how Japanese adult videos are transforme…
Translating Japanese Adult Movies in Taiwan
This paper is an attempt to reconsider the opposition between consumption and production in social sciences through a detailed analysis of the production of Chinese subtitles for a pirated Japanese adult video (AV) clip in Taiwan. We demonstrate that the way local pirate merchants provide Chinese subtitles is very much guided by the sexual roles of men and women, or what Sahlins calls a cultural code, in Taiwan because this makes Japanese AVs loo…
