  • Kambaata

    Yvonne Treis•CHAPTER•Historical Harpsichord, Vol. 2•2023

Kambaata is a Highland East Cushitic language spoken in southwestern Ethiopia. It has a phonemic length contrast both in its vowel and consonant systems. Kambaata is agglutinating-fusional and suffixing, with many portmanteau morphemes. Five open word classes are defined morphosyntactically: verbs, nouns, adjectives, ideophone, and interjections. Stress is phonemic and has a grammatical function; it serves, either alone or in combination with a s…

  • Mauro Tosco, A grammar of Gawwada, a Cushitic language of south-west Ethiopia

    Open Access•Yvonne Treis•ARTICLE•Linguistique et langues africaines•2023

Mauro Tosco, one of the most prolific authors in the field of Cushitic linguistics, has recently published a grammar of a little-known variety of the Dullay-cluster (East Cushitic) in southwestern Ethiopia. His grammar of Gawwada [ISO 639‐3: gwd/glottocode: gaww1239] adds to an impressively long list of publications on many Cushitic languages, which includes several grammatical descriptions, namely of the Karre and Tunni varieties of Somali (Tosc…

  • Verbal derivation in Kambaata (Cushitic), with a focus on the encoding of noncausal/causal alternations

    Open Access•Yvonne Treis•ARTICLE•Linguistique et langues africaines•2022

Kambaata, a Cushitic language of Ethiopia, has a rich verbal morphology. This paper first sets out to describe its productive verbal derivation processes, i.e. the forms and functions of the causative, the passive and the middle (autobenefactive) derivation. In the second part, the study starts from Haspelmath’s (1993) list of 31 verbal concepts to determine the preferred morphological strategies to express noncausal/causal alternations. The anal…

  • Issues and maize bread taste good when they're cool

Open Access•Yvonne Treis, Deginet Wotango Doyiso•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2019

This paper is an analysis of the basic and extended meanings of temperature lexemes and the grammar of temperature expressions in Kambaata in comparison to related Highland East Cushitic languages of Ethiopia. Globally, Kambaata has a system of two opposing temperature values, ‘cold’ vs. ‘warm/hot’. The lexeme iib- ‘be(come) warm/hot’ contrasts with caal- ‘be(come) tactile cold’ in the tactile frame of temperature evaluation, while it contrasts w…

  • Sara Petrollino, A Grammar of Hamar. A South Omotic Language of Ethiopia

    Open Access•Yvonne Treis•ARTICLE•Linguistique et langues africaines•2018

The Hamar ethnic group is one of the best studied in Ethiopia thanks to the works of the anthropologists Ivo Strecker and Jean Lydall who, together with their numerous students and other collaborators, have been doing research in the South Omo area for many decades. Their outstanding anthropological documentation, which also encompasses aspects of linguistic anthropology, has so far been in stark contrast to the slim documentation on the grammar …

  • Comparison in Kambaata

    Open Access•Yvonne Treis•ARTICLE•Linguistic Discovery•2018

This paper is an in-depth study of the expression of comparison in Kambaata, a Highland East Cushitic language of Ethiopia. It discusses not only quantitative comparison, i.e. comparison of relative and absolute inequality and comparison of equality, but also analyses the morphology and syntax of expressions of qualitative comparison, i.e. comparison of similarity. Apart from predicative constructions, the analysis takes into account attributive …

  • Switch-reference and Omotic-Cushitic Language Contact in Southwest Ethiopia

    Open Access•Yvonne Treis•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Contact•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Africa has up until now been considered a continent where switch-reference systems are extremely rare. This study shows that there is a confined area in the South of Ethiopia where many Omotic languages and a few Cushitic languages have fully grammaticalised switch-reference systems on dependent (co-)subordinate non-final verbs, so-called converbs. The paper describes in detail the switch-reference system of Kambaata (Cushitic) and gives an overv…
