Understanding the (Re)emergence of Military Rule in the Coup Belt
This study focused on the (re)emergence of military governments in a region of Africa that has earned the name ‘coup belt’. It is based on a data set of coups in 14 sub-Saharan African countries between 2003 and 2024, and using a process-tracing approach it examined the reasons for the frequency of military coups in these states. The data was subjected to critical discourse analysis and the discourse-historical approach. The study posits that the…
Understanding the United States Agency for International Development’s relationship with extremism financing
Only a few would doubt the impacts of United States’ financial investments in Europe after World War II. The same cannot be said of its commitments to the countries of the Global South, whose buffeting challenges are compounded by livelihood-threatening proliferation of extremist non-state actors occasioned by, among other things, multidimensional deprivations. Analysis of the regimes of past presidents in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic
The period since May 1999 is the single-longest democratic dispensation of Nigeria since its emergence as a state in 1960. For the very first time in Nigeria’s political history, over the twenty-five-year period, government changes hands between one democratically elected president to another, and also among political parties peacefully, despite the multifarious challenges. The paper explores some peculiar issues that confronted the administratio…
Westphalia state building in independent Africa
One key achievement of European colonialism is the attempt to introduce the institutions of Westphalia-model state to Africa. However, deprived of the imperative necessities for the development of a sound national spirit required for nations which have only recently come to self-consciousness, the modern state structure is not serviceable in Africa. Despite all that has been written about it, the failings of state-building in Africa remain widely…
Benefits of Nigeria’s Participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act
With a view to understand the benefits of Nigeria’s participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act ( AGOA ) this paper examines US–Nigeria’s trade relations between 2001 and 2022. The paper argues that the lofty provisions of AGOA are laudable, even though unworkable, and given the environments within which the provisions of the trade policy were drafted and enacted, the subscription was carried out, and the implementation is pursued AGO…
Diplomacy and Afterlife of Biafra in Nigeria
In the aftermath of the Nigerian civil war of 1967–1970, south-east Nigeria moved from scheming for global recognition of Biafra to agitating for a plebiscite that would determine whether the Igbos wish to remain a part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They have received varied degrees of international support in that regard. Using group theory to explain the diverse sectarian grievances within Nigeria, this paper locates the roles of internat…
