The Origin of The Acheulean
The appearance of the Acheulean is one of the hallmarks of human evolution. It represents the emergence of a complex behavior, expressed in the recurrent manufacture of large-sized tools, with standardized forms, implying more advance forethought and planning by hominins than those required by the precedent Oldowan technology. The earliest known evidence of this technology dates back to c . 1.7 Ma. and is limited to two sites (Kokiselei [Kenya] a…
Production and use of percussive stone tools in the Early Stone Age
Los márgenes del pasado. La producción transdisciplinar del saber arqueológico
The current theoretical crisis in Archaeology is caused by the conflict that exists between the philosophical systems of both archeological approaches processualism and postprocessualism. In this paper is proposed a participatory and transdisciplinary construction of the Archaeological knowledge in order to establish the foundations of an alternative theoretical paradigm

Nowadays, technological and processual interpretation of the lithic record has been generalized, partly displacing theclassical typological approach. Thereby the lithic variability and technological change have started to be contextualizedin the economical and environmental processes surrounding the lithic tool production. However, typology is still the onlyargument when discussing about cultural evolution, since the traditional sequence divided …
The Modernity, whose identity sign is the dialectic tension, has been raised over two great revolutions: the scientific and the industrial. But, an uncontrolled industrial process and population explosion, stimulated by a great energetic omnivorism, enabled by an incessant technological evolution, have caused a worldwide environmental crisis. Nowadays, this problem has turned into the most important challenge of the humankind. Traditionally, the …
An Experimental Study of Bipolar and Freehand Knapping of Naibor Soit Quartz from Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)
Recent excavations carried out in several Bed I and Bed II sites have shown that hominins at Olduvai Gorge used both bipolar and freehand knapping methods for quartz reduction. Due to the petrographic nature of quartz and to its heterogeneous response to fracture, the identification of bipolar knapping at any given site can be ambiguous and controversial. This work aims to overcome this problem by developing an experimental referential framework …
New insights into hominin lithic activities at FLK North Bed I, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania
Recent work at FLK North (FLK N) has unearthed a new archaeological assemblage recovered with precise control of its stratigraphic position. In the present work, the technological study of the new lithic sample is described. The results show the co-occurrence in the same site of different technological behaviors. At FLK N, hominins were involved in both percussion/battering activities and through freehand and bipolar knapping, in core reduction. …
