  • Bioarchaeology of Idaho in perspective

    Open Access•H Blatt, Samantha H Blatt et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2020•Referências: 26

The fortuitous discovery of an isolated Late Archaic burial (10MO84) in southeastern Idaho is a rare contribution to bioarchaeology of the region. This study describes the osteobiography of this skeleton and contextualizes results to published accounts of bioarchaeology within Idaho, the Great Basin, and the Intermountain West. Analysis suggests that there is much potential variability in burial styles and goods in the region through time, dental…

  • The Seagull Bay site—Clovis technology from American Falls on the Eastern Snake River Plain

    Open Access•Charles A Speer, Kenneth C Reid et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

The Snake River Plain may have served as a corridor for the earliest colonists spreading throughout the New World. It has been observed that the distribution of Clovis period sites and raw material used to produce diagnostic points reflects a detailed understanding of the environment. During the Terminal Pleistocene, there is little evidence of Clovis hunter-gatherers interacting with mega-fauna in the Snake River Plain, despite finding both in t…

  • Wait and Parry

Kenneth C Reid, Kenneth Reid•CHAPTER•Violence and Warfare among…•2016

Ethnographic accounts of plateau pacifism have come under growing criticism from archaeologists working in the Columbia and Snake River basins of the Interior Northwest. Archaeological evidence for violence continued to emerge, along with attempts to find appropriate terms for it. Chatters interpreted the orientations of cranial and arrow wounds to indicate feuds over resources rather than interethnic warfare. Although defensive works in the Inte…

  • Estimation of the Radiocarbon Reservoir Effect, Snake River Basin, Northwestern North America

    Open Access•W R Osterkamp, Thomas J Green et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2014•Citada por: 3•Referências: 22

Many archaeological sites along coastlines and rivers contain large quantities of marine and riverine bivalve shell. Often shell is the only datable organic material available to determine radiocarbon age estimates of features and to build regional chronologies. Shell is difficult to date accurately because of reservoir effects, and archaeologists have avoided it despite its abundance. If reservoir effects are understood, shell can provide accura…

  • Gravels and Travels

    Open Access•Kenneth C Reid, Kenneth Reid•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•1997•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

The presence of chert in mid-Holocene lithic assemblages along the Snake River has been attributed to long distance mobility, with the material introduced in bifacial form to the canyons from upland quarries. Geological field studies, however, show that chert, argillite, and quartzite are common in terrace and alluvial gravels along the lower Snake River. These lithologies probably provided a major source of high quality raw material for populati…

  • Organic-Tempered Pottery

    Open Access•James M Skibo, Michael Brian Schiffer et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1989•Citada por: 52•Referências: 18

This paper presents the results of testing technological and techno-functional hypotheses concerning the effects of organic temper. Behaviorally relevant tests are used to compare the performance characteristics of untempered, mineral-, and organic-tempered briquettes and vessels. The characteristics tested include impact resistance, abrasion resistance, portability, thermal shock resistance, ease of manufacture, and heating effectiveness. Organi…

  • Fire and Ice

    Open Access•Kenneth C Reid, Kenneth Reid•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1984•Citada por: 18•Referências: 17

Fiber-tempered potsherds recovered from three sites of the Nebo Hill phase in western Missouri and eastern Kansas date to between 4550 and 3550 radiocarbon years (2600-1600 B.C.) and represent the earliest dated vessels in the midwest. The occurence of fiber-tempered pottery at this time period and this far north and west of the traditionally-defined southeastern hearth for such wares requires a major reappraisal of the assumed distribution and a…

  • Upper Pennsylvanian Cherts Of The Forest City Basin

    Kenneth C Reid, Kenneth Reid•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1980•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Four previously undescribed midcontinental cherts are analyzed in terms of their identity and internal variability, geological context, source areas, procurement techniques, flaking properties, response to heat treatment, and geographic distribution

  • Psoralea Esculent A as a Prairie Resource

    Kenneth C Reid, Kenneth Reid•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1977•Citada por: 5•Referências: 3

The role of the prairie turnip, Psoralea esculenta Pursh, in the economy of Prairie and Plains cultures is examined through ethnographic and early eyewitness accounts. Results suggest that these economies were more reliant on vegetal resources than is often conceded, a conclusion in keeping with recent studies of hunter-gatherers. The concept of the upland prairies as an insignificant vegetal resource zone for prehistoric groups is questioned
