  • Suggested Change in Nomenclature of the Major American Time Periods

    Open Access•Arthur George Smith•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1957

In the Handbook of Texas Archeology by Suhm, Krieger, and Jelks, 4 major time periods are defined under the terms, 'Paleo-American,' 'Archaic,' 'Neo-American,' and 'Historic.'I can see no reason to use the element 'American' in the names of time periods in Indian prehistory. Strictly speaking, 'American' can be applied to any inhabitant of North, Central, or South America, past or present. But popular usage restricts the term 'American' to the pe…

  • Beveled or 'Rotary' Points

    Open Access•Arthur George Smith•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1953•Cited by: 2

Campbell and Ellis in their article on the Rio Grande Atrisco Sites (American Antiquity Vol. 17, No. 3, 1952) say: 'Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of the type (5 out of 8 specimens) is its tendency to show a definite rifling or beveling which would presumably insure its whirling in flight.' This is an amazing statement to find in a serious report made by two competent modern archaeologists.Beveling the edges of points is a very ancie…

  • Waterworn Artifacts from Late Pleistocene Lake Beaches in Northern Ohio

    Open Access•Arthur George Smith•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1953•Cited by: 1

North of the watershed between the Ohio River and the St. Lawrence drainages, Ohio is a fiat plain. It is an old lake bed, rising in shallow steps from the present shore of Lake Erie. The north edge of each 'step' is marked by a 'Lake Ridge,' a fossil beach marking a stage in the recession of the post-glacial lake. In a few places wave, action has cut a slight terrace where the old shore line met steeper than average terrain, but along most of th…

  • A Fluted Point from Long Island, N. Y

    Open Access•Arthur George Smith•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1952

Although fluted points are not very numerous in New York, it was there that they were first recognized as a distinct type under the name of “Seneca River Points” (Beauchamp, 1897, p. 21, Fig. 13, 14). The majority of the New York finds have been in the central section of the state and along the shores of Lake Champlain and Lake George. A search of the literature, and correspondence with both professional and amateur archaeologists, has revealed n…
