Stratigraphy and noncultural site formation at the Shurmai Rockshelter (GnJm1) in the Mukogodo Hills of North-Central Kenya
The Shurmai rockshelter (GnJm1) is located in the semiarid Mukogodo Hills region of north central Kenya. The rockshelter cavity is formed in Precambrian granite gneiss. The site contains a stratified sequence of sediments and archaeological materials that date from the end of the African Middle Stone Age (at or before ca. 45,000 yr B.P.) to modern times. The stratigraphic sequence at the Shurmai rockshelter is described and the principal noncultu…
A Geoarchaeological Assessment Of Bison Kill Site Preservation In The Little Missouri Badlands
This paper investigates the relationship between geomorphic processes and the preservation and interpretation of bison procurement localities in the Little Missouri Badlands of western North Dakota. Known archaeological data pertaining to bison procurement are examined within the context of the late Quaternary stratigraphic and geomorphic history of the badlands. Viewed from a geoarchaeological context, the spatial and temporal distributions of b…
The Geoarchaeology of Place
Because the landscape on which prehistoric people lived was dynamic and continually changed, the record of prehistoric activities across the landscape has been differentially preserved and destroyed. Insightful reconstructions of human organizational (settlement) systems from the archaeological record require a full understanding of the geological forces and history that have shaped that record. The landscape histories of the North Dakota Badland…
Landforms and archaeological site location in the little Missouri badlands
Patterns in the distribution of archaeological sites in the Little Missouri Badlands of North Dakota have previously been attributed to prehistoric cultural preference for certain landforms. These patterns include the concentration of Plains Archaic sites in upland settings and the predominance of Late Prehistoric sites in the alluvial lowlands. An understanding of Holocene stratigraphy provides new insights into these patterns, and other spatial…
Recent Excavations at Midipadi Butte
An archaeological data recovery program was conducted at 32DU2, the Midipadi Butte site, in eastern Dunn County, North Dakota, for the Omaha District, Corps of Engineers. At least two distinct cultural components are represented in the material recovered. A Besant complex, Woodland tradition component (ca. A.D. 1-800) is suggested on the basis of a Besant projectile point, cordroughened pottery, and previous testing data. The most visible and wel…
