  • Projectile points across the Northern Rocky Mountain front

    François B Lanoë, François Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2024•Referências: 32

In the recent past, the Front Ranges of the Northern Rocky Mountains formed a permeable boundary that people repeatedly crossed for trade, subsistence, or warfare, and where people occupying different parts of western North America interacted. In this paper we apply a landscape approach to study pre-contact projectile point morphologies and raw materials, and related changes in the geographic affiliations of peoples using the Billy Big Spring Sit…

  • The Swan Point Site, Alaska

    Open Access•Joshua D Reuther, Charles E Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Citada por: 4•Referências: 32

The Swan Point site in interior Alaska contains a significant multi-component archaeological record dating back to 14,200 cal BP. The site’s radiocarbon ( 14 C) chronology has been presented in scattered publications that mostly focus on specific archaeological periods in Alaska, in particular its terminal Pleistocene components associated with the East Beringian tradition. This paper synthesizes the site’s 14 C data and provides sequential Bayes…

  • McKean in the Northern Rocky Mountain Front

    François B Lanoë, François Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 20

We characterize the McKean (Middle Archaic) settlement of the Lewis Range in the Northern Rocky Mountain Front based on new excavations at the well-preserved and multi-component Billy Big Spring site, Montana, and on a reevaluation of the regional archaeological grey literature. The study area contains numerous McKean sites despite being generally considered marginal to the McKean world. Economic strategies emphasize upland sheep hunting using pr…

  • The Keystone Dune Site

François B Lanoë, François Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2018•Citada por: 4•Referências: 7

The Keystone Dune site, in central Alaska, contains a well-preserved archaeological occupation that dates to 13,430–13,230 cal yr BP. Archaeological excavations resulted in the recovery of features, and materials include hearths, faunal and lithic specimens, macrobotanical remains, and ocher. These were analyzed and interpreted to reconstruct past activities conducted at the site. Keystone Dune was most likely used for a short time, in the contex…

  • The Rosa-Keystone Dunes Field

    Open Access•Joshua D Reuther, Ben A Potter et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 21

Stabilized sand sheets and dunes hold a remarkable amount of information on paleoenvironmental conditions under which late Quaternary landscapes evolved in northern subarctic regions. We provide the results of a project focused on understanding the development of lowland environments and ecosystems, including dunes and sand sheets, which were critical habitat for early human occupations in subarctic regions. Our study area is the Rosa-Keystone Du…

  • Animals as Raw Material in Beringia

    Open Access•François B Lanoë, François Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2016•Citada por: 25•Referências: 25

We document the use of organic raw material in late Pleistocene eastern Beringia through the study of the site of Swan Point CZ4b, in central Alaska. CZ4b is attributed to the Dyuktai culture and dates to about 14,000 cal B.P. We interpret the occupation as a specialized workshop dedicated to the production and maintenance of organic-based tools following three lines of evidence: (1) limited on-site consumption of megafauna, (2) diversity of orga…
