  • Multiple Dendrochronological Signals Indicate the Eruption of ParíCutin Volcano, Michoacán, Mexico

    Paul R Sheppard, Michael H Ort et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2008

The eruption of Parícutin (1943–1952), a cinder cone volcano in Michoacán, Mexico, caused dendrochronological and dendrochemical responses that might be useful as general dating tools for eruptions. For the eruption period, pines near Parícutin have slightly suppressed ring widths plus high inter-annual variability of width. Wood anatomy changes include traumatic resin ducts and thin bands of false latewood. Dendrochemistry of tree rings shows li…

  • Lava, Corn, and Ritual in the Northern Southwest

    Open Access•Mark D Elson, Michael H Ort et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Fifty-five pieces of lava with impressions of prehistoric corn have recently been recovered from NA 860, a small habitation site near Sunset Crater Volcano in northern Arizona. Archaeological, geological, and botanical information suggest that husked ears of corn were deliberately placed in the lava's path when the volcano erupted in the mid-to-late eleventh century A.D. Over 40 kg of basalt lava containing the hardened corn casts were then taken…

  • Vulcan's Fury: Man against the Volcano

    Open Access•Michael Ort, Michael H Ort et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2000•Cited by: 6

A description of 15 volcanic eruptions through the centuries, with first-hand accounts of the different ways people reacted to them. It reconstructs the physical experience of eruptions and examines the advances in technology and volcanic surveillance in the 20th century

  • In Support Of A Marxist Union

Open Access•Mike Vivian, Michael Ort et al.•ARTICLE•Insurgent Sociologist•1974
