  • LiDAR analyses in the contiguous Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin, Guatemala

    Open Access•Richard D Hansen, Carlos Morales-Aguilar et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 80

LiDAR coverage of a large contiguous area within the Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin (MCKB) of northern Guatemala has identified a concentration of Preclassic Maya sites (ca. 1000b.c.–a.d. 150) connected by causeways, forming a web of implied social, political, and economic interactions. This article is an introduction to one of the largest, contiguous, regional LiDAR studies published to date in the Maya Lowlands. More than 775 ancient Maya settlem…

  • The Architecture of Early Kingship

John E Clark, Richard D Hansen•CHAPTER•Royal Courts of the Ancient Maya…•2018

This chapter examines one aspect of the early Maya royal court—its residential compounds—and compare them to earlier developments in the Olmec heartland, Chiapas, and Oaxaca. Courtly life, royal residence, and ritual architecture can be traced back even centuries earlier to San Lorenzo, but evidence of royal residences and compounds there is not yet fully published. The chapter addresses implications of the spatial and temporal patterns in the da…

  • Palaeolimnological evidence of late-Holocene settlement and abandonment in the Mirador Basin, Peten, Guatemala

    Open Access•Diane Wahl, David Wahl et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 11•References: 4

Pollen, loss on ignition and magnetic susceptibility analyses provide a high-resolution palaeoenvironmental record from Lago Puerto Arturo, Peten, Guatemala. The presence of Zea pollen ~2650 BC provides a latest date for the arrival of maize agriculture to the region. The following 3600 years are marked by significant opening of the forest and episodic pulses of erosion. During the early Preclassic, around 1450 BC, all proxies indicate an abrupt …

  • A Paleoecological Record from a Late Classic Maya Reservoir in the North Petén

Diane Wahl, David Wahl et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2007•Cited by: 14•References: 4

Aguada Zacatal is a reservoir located within a bajo 4 km west of Nakbe, Peten, Guatemala. It is 100 m in diameter and the surrounding berm is approximately 1 m tall. The small Classic period site of Zacatal is adjacent to the aguada. The reservoir's artificial lining prevents dry season desiccation and enhances microfossil preservation. In 1998 a 335 cm sediment core was taken from the center of the reservoir and analyzed for pollen, microscopic …

  • Holocene vegetation change in the northern Peten and its implications for Maya Prehistory

Open Access•Diane Wahl, David Wahl et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

An ∼8400 cal yr record of vegetation change from the northern Peten, Guatemala, provides new insights into the environmental history of the archaeological area known as the Mirador Basin. Pollen, loss on ignition, and magnetic susceptibility analyses indicate warm and humid conditions in the early to mid-Holocene. Evidence for a decrease in forest cover around 4600 cal yr B.P. coincides with the first appearance of Zea mays pollen, suggesting tha…

  • Climatic and Environmental Variability in the Rise of Maya Civilization

    Open Access•Richard D Hansen, Steven R Bozarth et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2002•Cited by: 27

Archaeological and ecological investigations in the Mirador Basin of northern Guatemala have recovered archaeological, phytolith, palynological, and pedological data relevant to the early occupation and development of Maya civilization in a specific environmental matrix. Fluctuation in vegetation types as evident in cores and archaeological profiles suggest that the seasonally wet, forested bajo environment currently found in the northern Peten w…

  • Notes on Maya Codex-Style Ceramics from Nakbe, Peten, Guatemala

    Open Access•Richard D Hansen, Ronald L Bishop et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•1991•Cited by: 8•References: 5

Maya codex-style ceramics are among the most highly sought antiquities for collectors because of the fine art and extraordinary mythological scenes depicted on the pottery; yet the source of these ceramics has remained elusive. Recent archaeological explorations by the Regional Archaeological Investigation of the North Peten, Guatemala (RAINPEG) project at the site of Nakbe, Peten, have discovered codex-style ceramics in archaeological context. T…
