  • Geochronologic data reveal Late Pleistocene to Holocene debris-flow history and wildfire association within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Klamath Mountains, northern California

    Open Access•John R Wood, John R “Jack” Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Understanding the local to regional history of extreme events such as debris flows and floods provides context to plan for and mitigate these hazards to life, property, and infrastructure. The Klamath Mountains of northwestern California have experienced both debris flows and devastating wildfires. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS) is at the heart of this range and has a wealth of debris flow–related landforms. Gaining an understanding …

  • Exploring the myth of Lake Saveh on the Iranian Plateau

    Open Access•Hamid Nazari, Jean-François Ritz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026•References: 18

This study presents a multidisciplinary reconstruction of a paleolake’s Holocene evolution in Iran’s Central Plateau, synthesizing sedimentological, geochronological, archeological, and historical evidence. Our findings confirm the existence of a large paleolake (~16–14 ka) in the northern plateau, with episodic desiccation and recharge. Lake levels declined by 250 m between 11.5 and 8.2 ka, stabilizing at ~850 m elevation. The 8.2 ka climatic co…

  • Confirming a Cultural Association at the La Prele Mammoth Site (48CO1401), Converse County, Wyoming

    Open Access•Madeline E Mackie, Todd A Surovell et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2020•Cited by: 13•References: 58

Archaeologists have long subjected Clovis megafauna kill/scavenge sites to the highest level of scrutiny. In 1987, a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was found in spatial association with a small artifact assemblage in Converse County, Wyoming. However, due to the small tool assemblage, limited nature of the excavations, and questions about the security of the association between the artifacts and mammoth remains, the site was never included…

  • Barrier island response to late Holocene climate events, North Carolina, USA

    Open Access•David J Mallinson, Curtis W Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

The Outer Banks barrier islands of North Carolina, USA, contain a geologic record of inlet activity that extends from ca. 2200 cal yr BP to the present, and can be used as a proxy for storm activity. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating (26 samples) of inlet-fill and flood tide delta deposits, recognized in cores and geophysical data, provides the basis for understanding the chronology of storm impacts and comparison to other paleoclima…

  • Optically stimulated luminescence age controls on late Pleistocene and Holocene coastal lithosomes, North Carolina, USA

    Open Access•David Mallinson, David J Mallinson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Luminescence ages from a variety of coastal features on the North Carolina Coastal Plain provide age control for shoreline formation and relative sea-level position during the late Pleistocene. A series of paleoshoreline ridges, dating to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5a and MIS 3 have been defined. The Kitty Hawk beach ridges, on the modern Outer Banks, yield ages of 3 to 2 ka. Oxygen-isotope data are used to place these deposits in the context of …

  • Numerical dating of a Late Quaternary spit-shoreline complex at the northern end of Silver Lake playa, Mojave Desert, California

    Open Access•Lewis A Owen, Jordon Bright et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007

  • Aeolian cliff-top deposits and buried soils in the White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA

    Open Access•J Elmo Rawling, Glen G Fredlund et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Aeolian deposits in the North American Great Plains are important sources of Holocene palaeo environmental records. Although there are extensive studies on loess and dune records in the region, little is known about records in aeolian cliff-top deposits. These are common on table (mesa) edges in the White River Badlands. These sediments typically have loam and sandy-loam textures with dominantly very fine sand, 0.5–1% organic carbon and 0.5–5% Ca…
