  • Geographic Information System Modeling of De Soto's Route from Joara to Chiaha

    Open Access•Kathryn Sampeck, Jonathan Boyd Thayn et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2015•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 31

This research revisits the question of the most likely paths traveled during the 1540 entrada of Hernando de Soto and colonizing efforts of Juan Pardo about 20 years later by utilizing the spatial modeling method of geographic information system (GIS) analysis to evaluate the favorability of different paths and place them within the context of recent archaeological and ethnohistoric research. Analysis results make the larger anthropological point…

    Open Access•Charles H Faulkner, Bill Deane et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1984•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 1

Trailed and incised drawings on the mud-covered walls of an East Tennessee cave have been identified as the artwork of Mississippian Indians who visited this sanctuary about 800 years ago. These unique drawings, called 'mud glyphs' because of their similarity to certain petroglyphs found in the southeastern United States, include abstract designs, symbols, zoomorphic forms and anthropomorphic figures. Symbols such as the forked eye and the 'bird-…
