Linguistic Landscape
Linguistic landscape (LL) labels a highly fruitful interdisciplinary discourse on visible language and the ways in which written language articulates with the social and physical public landscapes in which it appears. Linguistic landscapes consist most obviously of publicly visible signs (street, commercial, informational, etc.) but the context has extended to other meaningful elements of public space, sometimes with the broader label of semiotic…

Procedures and equipment have been described in previous date lists. Except as otherwise indicated, wood, charcoal and peat samples are pretreated with dilute NaOH–Na 4 P 2 O 7 and dilute H 3 PO 4 before conversion to the counting gas methane; marls and lake cores are treated with acid only. Very calcareous materials are treated with HCl instead of H 3 PO 4 . Pretreatment of bone varies with the condition of the bone sample, solid bone with littl…

Further Light on Carbon Isotopes and Hopewell Agriculture
The 13C/12C ratio in human collagen was determined for 19 individuals from Hopewell sites in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio and compared with 27 new measurements from individuals of Archaic, Mississippian, and Late Woodland affiliation. Additional measurements were made of elements in the food chain and on experimental animals fed on a diet of known composition containing maize. The similarity of the Hopewell measurements to those of nonmaize diet…

Mass Spectrometric Studies of Carbon 13 Variations in Corn and Other Grasses
Our experience in radiocarbon dating has shown that dates obtained from samples of corn cob and kernels are usually too young compared with dates from wood samples. Since other laboratories have also commented on the same problem, a study of C 13 /C 12 ratios in corn and other plant materials has been undertaken

University of Wisconsin Radiocarbon Dates III
This report summarizes the radiocarbon dates obtained at the University of Wisconsin since November, 1965; the procedures followed and equipment used have been described previously (Wisconsin II). The dates reported have been calculated on the assumption of a half-life of 5568 yr for C 14 , 1950 as the reference year. Samples have normally been run at 3 atm pressure for a minimum of 15,000 counts. The standard deviation quoted includes only the 1…
